Confirmation about the title of “Spider-Man 4” as “Brand New Day” not only locks down the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release schedule up to 2027 but also stirs curiosity about what this new installment might bring. Given that it will occur after the events of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” speculation is rife about a potential soft reboot of the MCU. What remains uncertain are details like the villains, characters, and storyline for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in his new circumstances. This includes unanswered questions from the end of “No Way Home” and any fallout from “Secret Wars.
In the final scenes of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Peter Parker’s Spider-Man identity is wiped from everyone’s memory, affecting friends like Ned and MJ as well. Initially, it appears that he has relinquished his role as Spider-Man, but a visit to Aunt May’s grave sparks renewed motivation. He then dons a new suit. Some remnants of the Venom symbiote remain in the MCU from the time when worlds collided during the movie, with Eddie Brock’s Tom Hardy not set to confront Holland’s Spider-Man. This implies that the remaining symbiote could have a different host, narrative, and progression in future stories. However, it remains unclear whether this leftover Venom symbiote will play a part in “Brand New Day”.
We’ve created a concise list of potential adversaries and allies for Spider-Man in his upcoming movie, based on speculation from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, past comic book tales, and rumors we’ve heard. By considering what fans have seen so far and the significance of these characters in various stories, we’ve highlighted some names that might appear and explain why they could be significant.
Take a look at the list below and share your thoughts on any changes you’d consider making in the comments section. We have approximately two years to ensure our decisions are well-informed and effective. Let’s make this count!
Chameleon
It seems appropriate for the film titled “Brand New Day” to have Spider-Man encounter his earliest comic book adversary, who was first introduced in 1963. Chameleon is Kraven the Hunter’s half-brother and was recently depicted in the Sony live-action movie towards its end. However, if he appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it may be a different interpretation, so it remains uncertain whether any similar details will transfer over.
A captivating element of the Chameleon’s appearance in the movie could be his connection to one of Spider-Man’s most notorious tales – the chaotic saga that is often referred to as the Clone Saga. The Chameleon goes too far with Spider-Man, pushing him over the edge when he brings his parents back from the dead, causing Spider-Man to lose his sanity. Additionally, the Chameleon played a role in the stories that unfolded after “One More Day”, which provide rich material for adaptation in this latest sequel.
Mephisto
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s consistently been subjected to mockery, from “Wandavision,” “Agatha All Along,” and “No Way Home.” So, might we perhaps see Mephisto appear in “Spider-Man: Fresh Start”? Is that something we’d be interested in? There are whispers that Sacha Baron Cohen’s enigmatic character in “Ironheart” could potentially be Mephisto.
As a fan, I found myself contemplating his addition to the villain lineup for Brand New Day, keeping him as a potential “what if” scenario. However, considering the anticipation for the fourth film, with its focus on a grounded, traditional Spider-Man narrative that steps away from global events and leans more towards street-level issues, Mephisto might not be the right fit. Given his immense power, Mephisto is not the kind of threat that could be easily dealt with by Spider-Man and local law enforcement.
Mister Negative
Among all characters from “Brand New Day” storyline and Marvel’s Spider-Man video games, Mister Negative stands out as my preferred one. This character, whose real name is Martin Li, is a Chinese immigrant who made a substantial fortune and established the F.E.A.S.T. center in Chinatown – a soup kitchen where Aunt May volunteered in the comics. In public life, he’s known as the benevolent face of the charity, while behind the scenes, he operates as a ruthless criminal boss.
As a movie critic, I find myself intrigued by the complex character of Mr. Negative. He’s not your typical hero, but more like a dual-natured being, oscillating between his virtuous and criminal aspects. His unique powers encompass superhuman strength, harnessing dark electrical energy, the capacity to corrupt others and manipulate them, and an unusual connection to Spider-Man’s associates, Cloak and Dagger, stemming from a shared experimental origin.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, with his proven talent, seems perfectly suited to bring this enigmatic character to life on the big screen in ‘Brand New Day’. I eagerly await the day when we can witness Mr. Negative’s journey unfold under his skilled guidance.
Venom/Symbiote
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe where Spider-Man resides, there’s a chance that a symbiote could make an appearance. But it seems more probable that the black suit will factor into the plot, paving the way for a future movie post “Brand New Day.” Additionally, the possibility of MCU Venom transforming into Anti-Venom under Mr. Negative’s control is intriguing, though not at the top of the list of possibilities.
It appears that the Marvel Cinematic Universe might bring their take on Venom into play down the line, making it an ideal moment for us to subtly set up some foundational elements for it.
Hobgoblin
Introducing the Hobgoblin as a potential antagonist is an intriguing possibility. One significant factor supporting this idea is the enigma surrounding the villain’s identity, which the film could exploit given Peter Parker’s friendship with Ned Leeds in the past. Since Ned no longer knows Peter Parker, there might be scope for him to transform into the villain without compromising his loyalty as a friend. In fact, he could be motivated by the Green Goblin, following his appearance in ‘No Way Home’.
Intriguingly, it’s premature to label Leeds as the city of Hobgoblin, but the suspense and enigma surrounding it would certainly pique the interest of any avid Spider-Man fan. It seems we have a potential superhero detective story on our hands, reminiscent of a more vibrant, less brooding Batman narrative.
Black Cat
In the comic series “Brand New Day”, it’s plausible that the Black Cat could first appear as a villain and then transition into an ally for Spider-Man. Felicia Hardy, who has a complex history with Spidey, moving between villainy and heroism, could potentially fill this role. Moreover, her past romantic involvement with Peter Parker adds depth to the storyline of “Brand New Day” and his relationship with Mary Jane Watson.
On social media platforms, many fans have speculated that she will likely portray one of the antagonists in the upcoming movie, a character different from Sadie Sink’s enigmatic role. Given the hints about a female villain in Spider-Man 4, Black Cat seems like a suitable fit for the position. As she has not been featured in any previous Spider-Man films, her inclusion would add an exciting new element to the storyline.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set for release on July 31, 2026.
