Title Character: Knull, the Dark God

Who is Knull and how will he make his way into the SSU? Similar to how the symbiote granted Eddie a glimpse of 80 billion light-years’ worth of hive knowledge spanning across multiple universes in the 2021 movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage, where they were momentarily drawn through the multiverse and into the MCU – here’s a rundown on the antagonist before the upcoming film, Venom: The Last Dance, graces the big screen on October 25th.

Who Is Venom 3 Villain Knull?

Knull made his debut in issue #3 of the 2018 series ‘Venom’, penned by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. However, issue #4 of that same series linked his origin to a 2013 issue of Jason Aaron’s ‘Thor: God of Thunder’. In this comic, it was revealed that Knull’s first-born, the god-slaying living blade All-Black the Necrosword, was taken by Gorr the God Butcher.

On Gorr’s native planet, the black-armored deity resided for a hundred years. His insatiable hunger took form as sinister vines, which Knull connected to weaker beings to sustain himself. By doing so, he could tap into their power and control their bodies like new suits. Thus, Knull transformed into the symbiote hive mind’s god-host, and his legion of darkness spread throughout the cosmos with a horde of winged Grendels: symbiote dragon offspring.

In the gloomy eras, Knull arrived on Earth in Scandinavia, only to have his symbiote forces stopped by Thor, the deity of thunder. With his link to his offspring disrupted by an Asgardian, Knull’s swarm disintegrated, and the symbiotes looked for new hosts who contaminated the symbiote colony like a parasitic disease – much like a venom. After releasing millions of symbiotes free from his command, Knull was swallowed by the Abyss and engulfed in darkness.

Knull’s symbiotes transformed into the Klyntar, which isn’t a planet of symbiotes as previously thought, but their term for “imprisonment.” In his initial appearance, Knull aimed to recover the lost fragments of his Grendel to escape from his confinement, and he warned Eddie Brock and Miles Morales that he would complete what he started millennia ago: eradicate his dark realm by annihilating Earth.

The epic tale by Cates and Stegman, titled “King in Black“, unfolds across the Marvel Universe as Knull releases his symbiote horde onto Earth, inciting a massive invasion that requires heroes such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, and the Avengers to band together and thwart it. Unfortunately, Knull slays Eddie, but the Silver Surfer, who previously fought the Symbiote Deity at the universe’s inception, resurrects him using the Enigma Force, a powerful cosmic entity formed from light.

In this tale, Venom, acting as a short-term deity of light, vanquished Knull, who bore the power of all darkness. In response to his demise, Knull informed Eddie/Venom that “the void is everlasting,” and that “darkness has fangs.” However, Venom too possesses sharp teeth in the form of his ability to fight back, ultimately bringing an end to Knull’s rule as the King in Black by incinerating him in the Sun. The death of Knull liberated the symbiote hive, and Eddie Brock assumed the role as host for the collective symbiote mind, becoming the new God in Black, or the King in Black reborn.
