Whovians Hint at Comeback that Was Never Coming

Following the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special, there was much anticipation surrounding breakout performer Steph de Whalley and her character Anita. Many viewers expressed their hope that she would reappear in future episodes.

In the Christmas special “Joy to the World,” written by Steven Moffat, Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor journeyed to the Time Hotel. During this trip, he encountered Anita, who managed the Sandringham Hotel. Due to the Doctor being stranded on Earth for a year, he and Anita developed a heartwarming bond in an exquisite scene that left numerous viewers delighted.

Although rumors have surfaced suggesting Anita might reappear, or even that she could be another incarnation of Mrs. Flood, Moffat maintains that Anita was a unique, standalone character.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but notice that the spaceship in this film resembles an old-fashioned phone booth. This is due to budget constraints; instead of sending Ncuti Gatwa globetrotting to discover exotic hotels, we were left with no other choice but to make do with a phone box-like spacecraft.

In simpler terms, what we’ve created isn’t full-blown romance, more like a soft, semi-romantic situation with Anita. So while Anita may be a cost-cutting measure, in terms of Doctor Who, that means she’s one of the most remarkable things to have happened.

It doesn’t automatically imply that Anita won’t come back eventually. In fact, Doctor Who often reintroduces characters thought to have only appeared once, like Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble. However, based on Moffat’s statements, it seems unlikely that she will return soon.

Moffat further discussed the prospect of him rejoining Doctor Who, having penned the Season 14 episode titled ‘Boom’ and the holiday special.

As a film critic, I must confess that my stance on this upcoming movie remains somewhat ambiguous. While I won’t rule out the possibility of it making waves, I’m not yet ready to declare it an absolute must-see. Let me reiterate, I’m not fabricating anything here!
