Following the death of Robert Adolph Boehm on October 6 at the age of 74 due to a fall in his Clarendon, Texas apartment, his son Charles Boehm found himself puzzled about how to pen an obituary that would do justice to his father’s spirited personality. After conducting some online research on the subject, he ultimately chose to capture the vibrancy that characterized his father during his lifetime.
In an interview with The Washington Post on October 16th, Charles expressed that while some might find it disrespectful or inappropriate, he personally thought the words perfectly encapsulated his father. To him, they were a spot-on description.
In the comical obituary, the 41-year-old described his father as “God’s problem now.”
On October 6, 2024, Robert Adolph Boehm, who had always been dedicated to his unique sense of decorum, is believed to have muttered an indecipherable and possibly unnecessary exclamation as he stumbled over a seemingly bothersome object, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the floor.
Later on, Charles detailed how his father developed an affinity for antique weapons, a passion that emerged following Robert’s successful evasion of the draft during the Vietnam War, which he remarked as “perhaps a fortunate turn of events” given his later pastime of firing guns that resulted in several bullet holes in his car’s dashboard. It also appeared that Robert had a knack for fashion, but Charles humorously referred to his father’s wardrobe as stocked with homemade leather moccasins and garments featuring clashing patterns.
Charles added that Robert always had a variety of harmonicas ready, not for his own playing, but to induce his cherished dogs to bark persistently during unusual hours, providing amusement for his numerous neighbors.
Following Charles’ humorous tribute to Robert’s life being shared online, the obituary has garnered more than a million views, as reported by Robertson Funeral Directors, the funeral home handling services for the Boehm family.
According to Chuck Robertson, the owner, Clarendon is home to around 2,000 individuals. What surprised him was how rapidly this town gained popularity; he had expected many to appreciate it, but the pace at which it took off left him in awe.
In light of the laughter and attention he receives from passersby, Charles urges everyone to treat elderly care with due importance.
Charles expressed that his hope from this experience is for everyone to help improve the mental health of individuals residing in small rural towns,” he said. “As people move there to retire, their children often disperse, leaving them isolated and vulnerable. Many slip through the support systems. There are countless individuals across the country who find themselves in similar situations as my father. We must make an effort to care for them.
