Why Amanda Seyfried Passed on Guardians of the Galaxy (and Was Dead Wrong)

Amanda Seyfried initially declined an invitation to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe by turning down a role in “Guardians of the Galaxy“. On the podcast “Happy Sad Confused”, she shared her memories of being offered the part of Gamora in James Gunn’s debut Marvel film. Seyfried admitted that she rejected the offer due to her apprehension about extensive green makeup and her belief that “Guardians of the Galaxy” might flop, becoming the first failure for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, she chose to star in “A Million Ways to Die in the West”.

As a film enthusiast, I must admit, the notion of being tied down for such an extended period, with the possibility of undergoing a color transformation, gave me quite a scare. Pondering over it for a couple of days, I couldn’t shake off the apprehension about spending six months annually in London. Moreover, being associated with a Marvel production that might not live up to expectations could potentially impact one’s career significantly. Initially, I feared that this project, featuring a talking tree and raccoon, might be Marvel’s first flop, dooming Chris Pratt and me professionally. Fortunately, my concerns proved unfounded, but I was merely being prudent, not courageous.

2014 saw the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” a Marvel masterpiece that catapulted previously unknown comic book heroes into mainstream fame. With an overwhelmingly positive reception, this film raked in $773.3 million globally and paved the way for two more installments. The Guardians became integral to the Infinity Saga, gracing screens in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Following the success of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Chris Pratt ascended the A-list ranks and took the helm in the Jurassic World trilogy. As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the impact this movie has had on the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Although the film “A Million Ways to Die in the West” received mixed reviews, actress Amanda Seyfried has had a successful career with various notable projects. She was even nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Marion Davies in David Fincher’s “Mank,” and she won an Emmy (among other awards) for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout.

Looking back now, it’s simple to think that Seyfried made a mistake by turning down Guardians of the Galaxy, but hindsight is always clearer than foresight. At the time, the film was still uncertain in its success potential. Although Marvel had achieved tremendous success with The Avengers, proving the shared universe concept worked, doubts persisted about whether Guardians of the Galaxy would be commercially viable. Choosing to star in a Seth MacFarlane comedy seemed like the safer option at that time. Few could have anticipated how spectacularly Guardians of the Galaxy would turn out.

Zoe Saldaña’s portrayal of Gamora was captivating, but it’s intriguing to imagine how Amy Seyfried would have approached the role, breathing life into the hardened warrior. Seyfried has the versatility to handle both humor and drama, making her a suitable fit for the Guardians of the Galaxy world. Although she didn’t get the chance to play Gamora (except perhaps in another universe), there’s a possibility that Seyfried might one day embody a different comic book character. Now that Gunn is managing the DC Universe with numerous films and TV series in development, given his vision, Seyfried could potentially join the lineup.
