Originally, the highly praised series “Star Wars: Andor,” starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, was intended to span five seasons, detailing his transformation from a reluctant thief into a dedicated Rebel hero. However, according to recent interviews with SFX (via Games Radar), creator Tony Gilroy decided to compress the story into only two seasons due to practical production challenges and physical constraints that emerged during the first season’s filming amid the pandemic. Consequently, the final season will feature an unusual narrative structure, utilizing time jumps and concentrated story arcs to encompass the remaining four years of Cassian’s pre-“Rogue One” experiences.

View Urgent ForecastDuring the midpoint of filming season 1, as we were overcoming Covid-19 challenges, and the sheer scale of the project was starting to become clear, producer Gilroy noted that he lacked the necessary energy for the task, and there were timing issues with actor Diego Luna because it takes too long for him to age realistically for a character who should look younger compared to his role in Rogue One. Fortunately, Disney stepped in and offered their support when Gilroy and the team found a solution.
Gilroy pointed out that their method for the show was unique and, as far as he knew, never tried before. They plan to progress by leaping a year between each episode, which they’ll fill with intriguing content. This means they’ll return for short periods, like three days at a time, so it’s like showing events on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. This way, the show will depict the remaining four years of Cassian’s journey leading up to Rogue One, while preserving the intense and high-quality atmosphere that marked the first season of Andor.
Everything We Know About Andor Season 2
In the second series of Andor, they’ll keep the same number of episodes (12) as the original, but the storyline is going to be divided into four parts, with three episodes making up each part. This new layout matches Disney+’s recent plan for distribution, where they’ll release these sections weekly instead of airing one episode a week like in the first season.
In the three-part sequences of Andor Season 2, each segment will depict a distinct year in Cassian’s transformation from an ordinary individual into the steadfast Rebel operative portrayed in Rogue One. This storytelling approach moves the timeline forward while zeroing in on pivotal stages of character evolution and the expansion of rebellion. As stated by Gilroy, constructing a unified narrative with these time leaps posed a considerable creative hurdle. “The challenge was figuring out how to return [to each chapter],” he said. “We aimed for it to be as smooth and effortless as possible, simply picking up where we left off.” There were numerous trials to ensure this approach would succeed.
Previously confirmed, Gilroy’s Season 2 of Andor will delve into the emergence of the Rebel Alliance from various resistance factions. Each time leap will depict a more coordinated rebellion as the series uncovers pivotal events in Star Wars lore previously hinted at in other sources. Joining the cast for Season 2 are Fiona Shaw portraying Maarva Andor (in flashbacks) and characters from the wider rebellion, such as Duncan Pow’s Ruescott Melshi, who eventually teams up with Cassian on the Rogue One mission. Additionally, Season 2 will see the return of Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Alan Tudyk as K-2SO, revealing how the witty droid initially collaborates with Cassian.
Disney+ is set to unveil new episodes from the second season of Andor, airing three per week starting from April 22nd. The following Fridays will see additional episodes released on April 29th, May 6th, and May 13th.
