The Avengers have rightfully gained the title of Earth’s Most Powerful Heroes, whether it’s through their comic book adventures or their live-action portrayals. Over the years, they’ve been involved in some truly spectacular stories, where we get to witness top-tier superheroes performing incredible feats. There seems to be a particular pattern in Avengers tales: present the most illustrious heroes from the Marvel Universe, confront them with the deadliest adversaries imaginable, and blend in intricate world-building and character development. Despite this recurring structure, it’s been challenging to find flawless Avengers stories, but readers were treated to an exceptional example in 2024 – Avengers: Twilight, penned by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Daniel Acuna.
Among the alternate universe tales crafted by Marvel, I’d argue that none quite measure up to the gripping narrative of “Avengers: Twilight“. This story masterfully blends the essence of the Avengers with a chilling and eerily prophetic glimpse into fascism spreading across the United States. It’s a superhero saga that seamlessly integrates political commentary, yet never loses its thrilling edge at every twist and turn. Avengers: Twilight redefines the Avengers’ role in a world gone awry, offering one of the darkest and most realistic Marvel stories in recent memory, spanning the last two decades. In essence, this tale takes the traditional ingredients and serves up an unparalleled reading experience that leaves you yearning for more.
Avengers: Twilight Is a Superhero Tour de Force
In the aftermath of a catastrophic event called H-Day, the story of Avengers: Twilight unfolds in a future where Ultron, the Avengers’ arch-nemesis, seized power over numerous villains and launched an assault on the world. The battle that ensued resulted in the death of many heroes, leaving a lasting impact on the planet. In the wake of the chaos, superheroes were outlawed, coming under the watchful eye of the government. For the first time in years, Captain America opted to live as an ordinary citizen without his supersoldier serum. Iron Man was presumed dead, leaving behind a son he had with the Wasp, who also met her end during the conflict. Thor abandoned Earth, leaving behind its inhabitants from the realm of Midgard. The remaining heroes retreated into their civilian identities, effectively disappearing from sight.
Indeed, this situation seems to be fostering fascism, with James Stark, son of Iron Man and Wasp, as well as Kyle Jarvis, a previously unidentified sibling of the Stark family’s butler Edwin Jarvis, playing significant roles in this development. Disenchanted with his civilian existence and disillusioned by the America he encounters daily, Steve Rogers seeks out Luke Cage. Cage presents an opportunity for Rogers to transform his life, as his band of Defenders has discovered a fresh supply of supersoldier serum. Reinvigorated, Captain America makes his return, prompting the Avengers to follow suit. The government responds by deploying the Thunderbolts against the new Avengers, providing them with a Hawkeye-like figure. Thor also reappears. However, James and Kyle harbor hidden agendas, with Kyle possessing a secret that could potentially bring about catastrophe.
In a fresh and understandable manner: Avengers: Twilight nails every aspect. Writer Chip Zdarksy showcases his exceptional skills with this title, making it a standout in today’s scene. It’s not just an excellent superhero tale but also a gripping political thriller. The portrayal of American fascism in Avengers: Twilight feels eerily relevant to our current times, as truth is manipulated and misused to gain power. The story carries an unsettling 2025 nationalistic vibe that’s seldom seen in Avengers narratives; the team in this story is remarkably political, and it pays off brilliantly. Moreover, Zdarsky’s understanding of the characters is impressive. His take on Captain America is one of the best renditions of the character in recent memory, which undoubtedly led to his appointment as the writer for the upcoming solo comic series of Star-Spangled Avenger.
In a class of its own, Acuna’s artwork transcends ordinary realms. Since the mid-2000s, he has been a prominent figure in the comic industry. Although not everyone’s taste, his unique style is tailor-made for this narrative. His distinctly stylized pencils and vibrant colors breathe life into the grim future portrayed in the book.
The action within the pages of this book is astounding, with Acuna lending a dynamic sense of movement and weight to the fight scenes that are often missing from comic and live-action superhero fights. He expertly captures the epic grandeur of Marvel’s heroes and the sinister nature of their most malevolent adversary, a covert menace lurking throughout the story.
This book showcases art that rivals the upcoming DC masterpiece, “Kingdom Come,” with Acuna earning a place alongside Alex Ross as one of the greatest superhero artists ever, through his work on “Avengers: Twilight.
Avengers: Twilight Is the Most Impressive Marvel Book in Ages
The Avengers movies have been enjoying great success at the cinemas, but unfortunately, their comic book counterparts haven’t fared as well since 2015. While there have certainly been some excellent Avengers tales, it’s been a long time since readers have found the Avengers they truly love in the comics. However, that has now changed with Avengers: Twilight. This comic brings together all the classic aspects of Avengers storytelling and introduces contemporary commentary, resulting in something unique and fresh from Marvel.
Marvel excels in creating superheroes, but they don’t always nail the combination of superheroes and social commentary perfectly. The upcoming comic series, Avengers: Twilight, however, does this exceptionally well. It’s not just an outstanding Avengers or Marvel story; it’s a top-notch superhero narrative. What makes it stand out is its demonstration of the immense potential that comics have as a storytelling medium, making it precisely what today’s superhero comic readers need.
