After years of refinement, it’s time for Avowed to debut on Xbox gaming systems and personal computer platforms at last.
The journey hasn’t been entirely smooth; there have been setbacks such as a delay and the elimination of multiplayer functionality.
Given that Obsidian Entertainment, the group responsible for Avowed, has built its reputation on creating immersive single-player games such as Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, one might find it unexpected that they would venture into multiplayer territory with this project.
Conversely, it’s said that developer Arkane, a subsidiary of ZeniMax, was compelled to make the game multiplayer, a decision that might have contributed to its less-than-optimal performance.
Hey, I’m curious about Avowed – does it have any plans for a multiplayer mode? Let me find out the details for you.
Is Avowed multiplayer?

Indeed, Avowed isn’t designed for multiplayer engagement. Instead, it’s a captivating single-player Role Playing Game set in the fantasy realm, devoid of any options for cooperative or networked play.
There are no plans for Avowed to receive multiplayer at some point in the future, either.
During the course of developing Obsidian, it was decided and implemented that features allowing multiplayer interaction were eliminated. Subsequently, the focus shifted towards creating a game designed exclusively for a single player’s experience.
Was Avowed multiplayer cancelled? Developer comments
As an ardent follower, I can tell you that the visionary team at Obsidian Entertainment has always been transparent about their initial plan for this game being centered around collaborative multiplayer.
In a recently released documentary commemorating its 20-year milestone, the CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, Feargus Urquhart, shared his thoughts on various topics.
The reason I did it was because, at the time, we were still self-governing and marketing it made it more intriguing for publishers. Additionally, when you’re asking for a significant amount like $50 million, $60 million, $70 million, or even $80 million, you need to have something captivating to discuss.
Having multiple players added an exciting twist. It was akin to combining peanut butter and chocolate – two great things coming together, leaving you thinking, ‘This has got to taste amazing!’
Justin Britch, leader in our development team, mentioned: “Our attention was heavily invested in cooperative aspects and revamping how our pipelines function, as well as altering conversation writing styles and quest designs – essentially every aspect of our work.
After spending some time, we came to understand that we weren’t leveraging our strengths effectively. As a result, we decided to change direction in the game development process, primarily to ensure that it truly embodied the essence of Obsidian rather than straying from our unique style.
Avowed is set to launch on 18th February across Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows.
