It came as a shock to many that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson allowed Amazon to acquire Bond, but what may have left people even more astounded is why Barbara Broccoli relinquished creative control over James Bond, a franchise she has tightly held onto for decades.
There are whispers that the start of the end occurred in January 2024, when three high-ranking Amazon executives – Jennifer Dalke, Courtenay Valenti, and Julie Rapaport – met with her for a dinner discussion regarding an initial plan for the first Bond movie under Amazon’s ownership, which they had acquired for $8.5 billion in 2022. It is said that Albert R. Broccoli was less than thrilled by what he learned during this meeting and promptly returned to London. Soon after, rumors suggest that Amazon started negotiating the possibility of her relinquishing creative control.
The discussions persisted for an entire year, growing more complex as time went on. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, having invested a significant amount of money, is eager to modernize the franchise and incorporate technology advancements, spin-offs, and other enhancements. However, Broccoli and Wilson have maintained tight control over the brand and have resisted expanding it at every turn. Despite occasional disagreements, they didn’t want to oversaturate the market with Bind films. This strategy has made the films highly anticipated when they are released, often with long gaps between releases to prevent audience fatigue, a strategy that has been criticized in the case of Marvel films in recent years. Some argue that this approach may have hindered the franchise, as both producers retain final cut on each film and have turned down offers from directors like Christopher Nolan, who showed interest a few years ago, instead opting to produce Oppenheimer. Spielberg too had expressed interest back in the late 1970s but was blocked by Cubby, Barbara’s father, who felt that Spielberg was too inexperienced at the time.
The question still stands: What led Barbara Broccoli to part ways with James Bond? At 83, Wilson may find it welcoming to relinquish the tumult and stress that often comes with such a position, as he prefers to focus on other pursuits during his later years.
Regarding my role with the franchise, I stepped up to the plate back in 1995 with Goldeneye and earned a tough-as-nails reputation, standing firm against executives from MGM. However, as anyone can understand, such battles can take their toll. After a year of intense negotiations with Amazon’s top brass, it seems I reached my limit. Allegedly, I expressed my frustrations to the Wall Street Journal, labelling them ‘foolish idiots.’ This remark suggests that I had grown weary of diplomacy and was ready for a change.
The article in the Wall Street Journal was reportedly read by Bezos, who, upon hearing what she said, allegedly responded, “I don’t care about the cost, get rid of her.” This decision ended up being expensive for him, with rumors suggesting a $1 billion payout. Despite this, she remains financially secure, with an estimated net worth of $500 million. With creative control now passed to Amazon, the franchise will no longer be managed by family members, as Wilson’s son and a niece are said to be preparing to take over. This appears to mark the end of that era.
Once the deal, which requires approval from U.S. and U.K. regulators and is anticipated this year, receives final approval, Amazon will have a smooth path forward to continue its progress. Eager to recoup their investment, Amazon plans to act swiftly after having put a significant amount into a Lord of the Rings series that underperformed, as well as a Bond TV series, reportedly the most expensive ever made at $300m for six episodes.
It is anticipated that a seasoned film producer will be tapped to lead the Amazon Bond film projects, bringing a unique perspective and additional spin-off films may also be planned.
It’s uncertain for now why Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are selling their shares, but it seems likely that in the coming years, we could witness an abundance of James Bond movies and merchandise.
