As a lifestyle expert, I can empathize with Billie Lourd’s bittersweet feelings during the holiday season. Losing a loved one, especially a mother like Carrie Fisher, is an unimaginable loss that leaves deep scars. Yet, Billie’s resilience and ability to find joy amidst the pain are truly inspiring.
The holidays are always a bittersweet time for Billie Lourd.
Over nine years since the passing of her mother Carrie Fisher at 60, the actress famed for “Scream Queens” – who has a 4-year-old son Kingston and a 2-year-old daughter Jackson with husband Austen Rydell – discusses how she and her family deal with each approaching anniversary of the beloved Star Wars icon’s demise.
Eight years ago, on December 27th, my mother passed away, as I shared on Instagram. My son often comments, ‘that’s a long time!’ Every year, I find myself apprehensive about this day. Anticipation usually turns into reality, as I feel quite low. But, much like the weather, the gloomy feelings I woke up with today gave way to bright sunlight when my children woke up.
Every year on this day, I find myself navigating through an intense emotional storm, much like a tropical one, as it reminds me of my mom’s passing. Yet, amidst the heavy downpour, there are moments when the sunlight breaks through, making the ordinary moments more radiant than usual. Just as there are no rainbows without rain, these difficult times bring forth a unique beauty that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.
But that doesn’t mean Fisher’s absence gets any easier with each passing year.
“There’s a great Anne Lamott quote, grief is ‘like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly – that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp,'” Lourd continued her caption. “And that describes how I feel today perfectly. Yes the grief weather is cold and yes I may have a limp but I am absolutely dancing through life (oops I quoted wicked?). And I am actually a better dancer with my limp.”
Plus, Lourd said she now takes nothing for granted.
I’ve found a greater appreciation for life’s small wonders due to my sorrow, and today I find myself both grieving and thankful. I see the enchantment in my children, knowing that she is a part of that spellbinding essence. I experience all the emotions – the sorrow, the joy, the yearning, the wonder, the void, the abundance – and they exist harmoniously within me. Sending love to those who need it most.
