Why Bix Kept Andor’s Biggest Mystery Hidden In Andor’s Final Season

The Star Wars series that captivated audiences for two seasons on Disney+ has now concluded its run. This exceptional production offers a compelling exploration of the roots of rebellion leading to the Empire’s downfall as depicted in the Original Trilogy. Through the perspective of Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the series presents a mix of despair and optimism within a seemingly hopeless galaxy.

Wrapping up the beloved series in an appropriate manner, it ties directly into the events of Rogue One. Although viewers were aware that Andor’s main character would meet a certain end, the series still manages to surprise us significantly. The show’s most stunning twist unfolds in its final scenes, as Adria Arjona’s Bix Caleen makes a sudden reappearance, bearing an object (or person) that drastically alters Cassian’s entire narrative arc.

Why Bix Kept Cassian’s Child From Him

Bix Knew How Much the Rebellion Needed Cassian

In the closing scenes, we learn what happened to Bix Caleen following her separation from Cassian earlier in the series. It appears that after leaving Yavin 4, Bix returned to Mina-Rau, where she, Brasso, Wilmon, and Cassian had been stationed four years prior. Here, she reconnected with B2EMO, who was left behind long ago, and assimilated back into the farming community. However, the real twist is when it’s disclosed that Bix is cradling a child, strongly suggesting it’s Cassian’s offspring, and looking up at the sky, seemingly anticipating Cassian’s arrival, which will never happen. Unbeknownst to Cassian until this moment, he was a father, with Bix hiding the child’s existence from him for more than a year.

It is clear that Bix hid Cassian’s child from him due to her understanding of how deeply he cared for her, fearing it might distract him from the Rebellion cause. Given the importance of Cassian to the Alliance, she feared that she herself would become the reason for his departure. With the knowledge that she was pregnant, Bix hastily left Yavin 4, leaving a message for Cassian about their future reunion once the war ended. However, her sudden disappearance in the dead of night forced Cassian to continue fighting the Empire, with little hope of ever reuniting with his family. Although Bix hoped that one day the fighting would cease and Cassian could return home to meet his child, this dream was never realized.

Bix’s Secret Makes Rogue One More Tragic

Cassian’s Child Changes His Arc in Rogue One

In an interview following the series finale, Tony Gilroy discussed Bix’s surprising revelation which he believes intensifies Cassian’s fate in “Rogue One.” According to Gilroy, this moment adds a bittersweet touch to the end of “Andor,” making Cassian’s sacrifice even more poignant. He stated, “I think it makes his sacrifice all the more bitter.” For those who may have questioned Bix’s departure in episode nine, this revelation offers clarification and perhaps encourages viewers to reconsider their doubts about that scene. This moment significantly alters Cassian Andor’s storyline in “Rogue One,” as audiences now understand that he has a wife and son waiting for him at home. Sadly, Cassian remains unaware of his child and dies without ever discovering the truth.

Despite the somber events surrounding Andor family, there’s a ray of optimism left. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Gilroy shared that Bix’s final scene was intended to end on a hopeful note rather than focusing solely on the tragedy seen in Rogue One. As Gilroy put it, “I was desperate to end on a hopeful note,” emphasizing that the phrase “‘Rebellions are built on hope’ isn’t just a T-shirt, but a real source of inspiration for many.”

In the movie Rogue One, Cassian Andor sacrifices himself, but his death serves a greater purpose. By giving up his life, he transmits the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, providing them with the opportunity they need to destroy the Empire’s superweapon and free the galaxy. In this way, while Cassian makes the ultimate sacrifice, he does so for the creation of a better galaxy for the son he never knew he had.

Will Cassian and Bix’s Child Ever Appear After Andor?

Cassian Andor’s Legacy Could Live On

In the grand scope of the Star Wars universe, it’s plausible that Cassian and Bix’s child could resurface following the storyline of Andor. This unnamed offspring might serve as a focal point for tales set post-Galactic Civil War, offering insights into the Andor family’s fate after Cassian’s demise. Notably, Star Wars is currently developing stories that take place in 9 ABY, a time when the child would be approximately ten years old. It’s speculated that Bix and her son could feature in one or more of these projects, contributing to the fight against the remaining Imperial forces, a tribute to Cassian’s legacy.

From my perspective, the captivating allure of Bix and her son in the Star Wars universe lies in the enigma that surrounds them. The glimmer of hope that Gilroy mentioned will endure as long as we’re left wondering about their destiny. Should they never reappear, fans will be compelled to imagine that they spent the rest of their lives grateful for Cassian’s selfless act in shaping a brighter future for them and the galaxy. While it might be enticing for Star Wars to resurrect these characters, it is far more compelling for Andor’s conclusion to keep their fates shrouded in mystery.
