Why CBS Delayed Watson Season 2 and How It Risks Losing Viewers

The Moriarty twist at the end of the first season left viewers talking, but now CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach has announced something even more unexpected: Elementary spinoff starring Morris Chestnut won’t return until January 2026, a full eight months later. This significant gap is troubling for a new show in need of momentum to keep going.

Reisenbach informed Deadline that there simply wasn’t any available space on the schedule. In fact, there seemed to be no suitable alternative slot for it.

The Case of the Missing Logic: Why Would CBS Delay Watson Season 2?

It appears that the game is in motion, and CBS seems to have a preference for certain productions. The explanations given for scheduling seem questionable, especially considering that CBS has made room for Taylor Sheridan’s newest project, “The Road,” which will take over the 9 p.m. Sunday slot previously held by “Watson” this fall. This decision to prioritize another Sheridan production over a medical drama that had already garnered decent ratings might be met with groans from some, given that Taylor Sheridan is already producing numerous shows for Paramount+ and has many more in the pipeline (including “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “1923,” “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Lioness,” “1944,” “The Madison,” “Y: Marshals,” and “Dutton Ranch”).

Watson’s ratings based on Nielsen data are nothing to underestimate. The Sherlock Holmes spin-off series garnered impressive viewership, with its debut episode attracting 18.7 million viewers across multiple platforms within a span of 35 days post-broadcast. This is an admirable figure for any network, but it appears CBS is satisfied to let the show take a break from regular television broadcast for almost a year.

Reisenbach’s defense also leaned heavily on Paramount+ performance:

She mentioned that Watson performs exceptionally for us during streaming, too. Therefore, we anticipate that those viewers who might miss it at 10 o’clock will still catch up with it on streaming due to its strong following on Paramount+. In our opinion, it offers the best of both worlds.

Critics might perceive this as a deception, and it could be so annoying that even Sherlock would scoff at it. Just because a show is successful on streaming platforms doesn’t guarantee long-term TV ratings momentum. An absence of eight months from regular television broadcasts could lead to losing casual viewers who won’t recall the show when it eventually comes back, creating an enigma regarding its future viewership.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement when I think about the return of Watson in January 2026! However, it seems like CBS has some big plans for Sunday nights. They’re planning to team up Watson with Tracker, and surprise, surprise, another Sheridan production – the Yellowstone spin-off, Y: Marshals, starring Luke Grimes. Reisenbach isn’t worried though; he’s banking on the success of Yellowstone rubbing off on Watson!

I’m quite certain that both Tracker and Y: Marshals will serve as significant precursors for Watson, given their substantial impact.
