As a seasoned film critic, I found myself intrigued by the ongoing debates surrounding gender activists and J.K. Rowling, yet this doesn’t deter the esteemed John Lithgow from embracing the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore in the forthcoming HBO series.

John Lithgow, in an interview with The Times of London, clarified that external opinions won’t sway his decision regarding his role in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series. He spoke about the ongoing controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling and the criticism he has faced since joining the cast as Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Lithgow admitted he hadn’t anticipated the strong criticism from Rowling’s detractors, but remained unperturbed. He clarified that it was a significant decision because it might be his final major acting role. He added that, given its eight-year duration, he was contemplating mortality and saw this role as an excellent way to wind down his career.

Prior to taking on the role, Lithgow disclosed that a friend, who is the mother of a child who identifies differently from their birth gender, had written him an open letter about J.K. Rowling, titled “An Open Letter to John Lithgow: Please Reconsider Harry Potter“. Lithgow referred to this letter as a “warning sign”, indicating the strength of the organized opposition towards projects linked with Rowling.

Even after getting the letter and facing broader criticism, Lithgow remained resolute when questioned about whether the backlash had caused him to rethink his decision to join.

“Oh, heavens no,” he replied, questioning why Rowling’s views on gender should impact his work.

He pondered, “What possible relevance could this have?” he remarked. Lithgow stated that he hadn’t met Rowling yet, but he was eager to discuss things with her in the future.

J.K. Rowling, an executive producer for the Harry Potter television series, continues to play an active part in the project’s development. As per HBO CEO Casey Bloys, Rowling has had a substantial impact on choosing the show’s writer and director. Bloys clarified that while Rowling’s opinions have sparked debate, they haven’t influenced casting choices, writer recruitment, or production processes.

Earlier this year, it was officially announced that Lithgow would be playing Dumbledore. He found the prospect both exciting and tinged with sadness, acknowledging that the extensive time commitment and magnitude of the role were aspects he weighed thoughtfully before accepting.

As for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, those haven’t been cast yet.

Lithgow’s justification for his action mirrors the stance taken by actor Pedro Pascal after he publicly criticized J.K. Rowling, calling her a “disappointing failure” following her approval of a UK Supreme Court ruling that affirmed legal sex recognition as being biologically based. The ruling underscored that facilities like shelters, hospital units, and sports competitions could be gender-specific based on one’s birth sex, without infringing upon broader legal rights. Rowling, an advocate for maintaining women’s spaces in line with biological facts, endorsed the court’s verdict as a crucial upholding of existing protections.

In spite of criticism from certain public personalities and advocacy organizations, J.K. Rowling continues unwaveringly with her stance. Being a survivor of significant personal hardship, she’s openly discussed the value of creating spaces specifically for women, asserting that such spaces safeguard some of society’s most susceptible individuals. Instead of withdrawing under pressure from public backlash, Rowling has persisted in utilizing her influence to advocate for what she terms as fundamental rights grounded in real-life circumstances.

Instead of being sidelined by her detractors, J.K. Rowling continues to stand out as one of the most accomplished and impactful authors of contemporary times. The Harry Potter books alone have sold over 500 million copies globally, giving rise to a vast empire encompassing films, theme park features, merchandise, and now a fresh TV adaptation. Remarkably, Rowling’s continued commercial success and cultural relevance, in the face of ongoing attempts to undermine her credibility and silence her voice, have further solidified her position as a notable figure not just in literature but also in public discourse.
