Why isn’t Sally Hawkins in Paddington 3? Mrs Brown recast for Paddington in Peru explained

As a movie reviewer with over three decades of experience in the industry, I must admit that change is inevitable, even for beloved franchises like Paddington. But when it comes to replacing Sally Hawkins as Mrs Brown in Paddington 3, I found myself feeling rather bear-y (couldn’t resist the pun).

Back in 2020, when it was announced that Paddington 3 was being developed, it was disclosed that a significant modification would be made to the film.

It’s been revealed that Paul King, known for adding his magical touch to the first two movies, won’t direct the third one. Instead, Dougal Wilson will step in as the new film director.

Besides this modification, the movie’s changes don’t stop there. In June 2023, when the film’s cast was officially announced, fans were taken aback to learn that a cherished franchise actor, Sally Hawkins, would no longer be part of the production.

This change is due to the fact that the character of Mrs. Brown, portrayed by Hawkins in the initial two movies, will be played by a different actress in this upcoming sequel.

You may be wondering why Hawkins was replaced from his role, as well as who will portray Mrs. Brown in Paddington 3 set in Peru. Let me fill you in on all the details, along with what both actors have shared about this change.

Recently, Hawkins openly shared with fans that her choice was not to rejoin the cast for the third movie in the series. She explained that it felt like “the perfect moment” for her to bid farewell to the franchise.

The actor shared with Varity in June that he believes now is the perfect moment for someone else to take charge, and there’s hardly anyone more fitting than the exceptional Emily Mortimer; she truly stands out as unique.

I’ve got a deep affection for the magical realm of Paddington, and that affection remains constant. It’s hard not to feel a pang of longing for both my real and fictional family members who have been part of this journey with me.

Creating the initial two movies was undeniably some of the most rewarding and innovative phases in my filmmaking journey. These projects brought immense pleasure, and they remain deeply cherished memories that will always stay close to my heart.

In the upcoming film, actor Hugh Bonneville, portraying Mr. Brown, assures us that no ominous plotlines will unfold.

He explained, “It’s simply an exchange without any hidden complications. Nothing like a messy separation has occurred. It just so happened that Emily appears to be the ideal match for us.

Wilson commented: “We were fortunate to have Emily join us. She’s vibrant, warm, and incredibly intelligent; being a writer herself, she’s excellent at improvising. The part is challenging; she serves as the emotional heart of the Browns and has a deep emotional connection with Paddington.

Additionally, joining the cast of Paddington set in Peru are Olivia Colman portraying a melodious nun and Antonio Banderas assuming the role of the commander of an exciting vessel.

Simultaneously with Bonneville, Ben Whishaw from “This Is Going to Hurt” continues his voice performance as Paddington, while Julie Walters reappears as Mrs. Bird and Jim Broadbent resumes his character, the antique shop owner, Mr. Gruber.

Emily Mortimer has replaced Sally Hawkins as Mrs Brown in Paddington 3.

The actress recently revealed she had some trepidation about taking on the role.

On the episode of Graham Norton’s BBC talk show last Friday (1st November), she mentioned that it was pleasant to be married to Hugh Bonneville (her on-screen husband) which made things easier, but stepping into such an extraordinary project was nerve-wracking.

Mortimer went on to say, “I felt concerned because I didn’t think I could match the exceptional act Sally delivered.

She shared, “I could only contribute my unique take and cross my fingers it was even half as wonderful. People often say this, but it truly is an exceptional, compassionate, and delightful group with a heartwarming, caring ambiance.” She continued, “It may sound cheesy to express, but I believe there’s something about the essence of Paddington that brings peace into everything.

Paddington in Peru will be released on Friday 8th November 2024.
