As an enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the latest addition to the management simulation series – Two Point Museum! However, fellow Nintendo Switch owners like myself might have missed out on it this time around, as the game hasn’t been released for our platform yet. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a future release!
Previously released games, namely Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus, have successfully been ported to Nintendo Switch as well.
After surpassing the one-year mark, Hospital finally made the significant jump, while Campus was instantly available across all platforms.
Curious to know more? During the Gamescom conference held in August 2024, I had the opportunity to pose questions to two main developers. Keep reading for the inside scoop!
Why isn’t Two Point Museum on Switch? What the developers have said
At Gamescom last summer, we queried Two Point Museum’s creative director, Ben Huskins, about the absence of Nintendo Switch from the list of confirmed platforms.
Huskins responded: “We’re available on Steam, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 at the moment. As for next-generation consoles, I assume you’re aware of that as well?
He mentioned: “Should we decide to release the game on additional platforms later on, we’ll make sure to inform everyone about it.
In response to our statement that previous games in the series weren’t initially released on all platforms simultaneously, Huskins said, “Indeed, we first launched on PC [with Hospital], while console versions followed afterwards. The experience of doing the console version of Hospital taught us a great deal, which we then applied to Campus.
In addition, at the museum, we aimed to incorporate technology innovatively. Notably, the lighting is quite impressive, enhancing the usual museum atmosphere.
Now, executive producer Jo Koehler provided some additional details regarding the lighting in this game, explaining how it expands upon the capabilities seen in earlier titles.
She shared, “The windows function wonderfully! They let light in, which is fascinating. Can you imagine being in a room without a window, it would be so dark. We have wall lamps, a fireplace, and the whole scene looks absolutely stunning.
In our vision, each exhibit should not only capture attention but also evoke a sense of uniqueness and importance. To achieve this, we’ve subtly illuminated every display to create an enchanting atmosphere that encourages appreciation and care. The result is quite stunning.
In this stage, we inquired whether the improved lighting effects were areas the team had been able to devote more attention to since the game’s release on PC and current generation consoles, opening up additional possibilities, so to speak.
Huskins responded: “In one aspect, we’ve really leveraged technology, and another factor is… due to how the game is designed, it motivates players to frequently visit their museums. This is because after investing numerous hours in gathering various items, taking care of them, arranging thoughtful displays, moving around and customizing everything, people often develop a strong bond with their museums.
In contrast to prior games where many players often earned three stars and moved on, our aim with “Museum” is to create a sense that you’re not just saying goodbye forever.
There’s often incentives to revisit and slightly enlarge or rearrange the museum. As you traverse through new territories on your map, you might discover unique exhibits that you haven’t seen before. These seem like a great addition to the collection you already have in your other museum.
Indeed, you might expand your museums with grandeur, aiming to draw larger crowds and offer an array of activities. Consequently, each museum becomes quite bustling. Our main emphasis, however, lies in the richness and complexity of each exhibit.
So, there you have it.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that the rich immersion offered in Two Point Museum and its enhanced lighting effects are directly attributed to the strategic decision of not releasing it initially on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
Absolutely, it’s expected that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released this year. During our conversation with developers, they didn’t dismiss the possibility of other platforms in the future. For the time being, here’s an explanation as to why the game wasn’t launched on the Nintendo Switch on its debut day!
