Why It Took 14 Years for Final Destination to Return and Its Hidden Secrets

Generally, a long gap between movies in a series might suggest waning popularity or even disinterest, but this isn’t always true for the Final Destination films. Although the 2011 sequel didn’t perform well at the box office, it didn’t completely lose its appeal. In fact, it took around 14 years for the sixth installment, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” to be released. However, the wait proved worthwhile as the movie was highly praised by critics and had the franchise’s biggest opening weekend earnings at the box office.

At TopMob, we thoroughly enjoyed “Final Destination: Bloodlines”, as our comprehensive review attests. In an exclusive interview with Eric Eisenberg, franchise producer and original co-screenwriter Glen Morgan elaborated on why the significant gap between films wasn’t solely due to one cause. As evidenced in the video below, he first pointed out:

At TopMob, we found “Final Destination: Bloodlines” to be highly entertaining, as indicated by our detailed review. In an exclusive chat with Eric Eisenberg, franchise producer and original co-screenwriter Glen Morgan explained that the delay between films wasn’t just due to a single factor. In the video below, he started off by saying:

These films are intricately complex, demanding both technical finesse and creative ingenuity to ensure all elements coalesce effectively. The plausible and convincing is key, as Final Destination thrives in the realm of extraordinary occurrences – think of it as a once-in-a-million event that forms the core of this series’ success.

To determine if Glen Morgan’s claim is valid, consider this: The style of movies like Final Destination is quite unique in the horror genre, where similar films are abundant. While other films may revolve around characters evading inevitable deaths, what truly distinguishes the FD series is its creative and intricate death sequences, as well as its unforeseen massacres. Creating a diverse set of scenarios that can logically connect back to one another without losing coherence isn’t an easy feat.

More From Final Destination: Bloodlines

I managed to make it through the “Death Chair” experience of Final Destination: Bloodlines in 4DX, and we really should discuss how powerfully it amplifies the film’s kill scenes.

Surely, the absence of regular Final Destination sequels over time fostered a renewed wave of death-defying concepts and gruesome deaths. Yet, even with the inspiration to proceed, it doesn’t always guarantee that the broader universe shares the same pace.

Glen Morgan went on, indicating that the early years of the 2020s presented a prolonged period of difficulty for Hollywood, where initiating productions smoothly wasn’t effortless. Putting it in his own terms, he referred to this timeframe as challenging for the film industry.

Due to Covid-19, actors’ strikes, and refining the script for about two years, it amounts to almost six years in total. However, despite appearances, the production didn’t take that long; instead, unforeseen circumstances hindered the film’s completion. We’re simply thrilled to be here now, finally able to share our work with you.

Instead of growing disheartened and annoyed by real life interfering with their creative on-screen demises, everyone working behind the scenes was able to focus even harder to make sure that Bloodlines ticked off every imaginable box that fans would find most thrilling.

In the process of completing it, we gained valuable insights into what made those other films successful, as well as identifying certain aspects that proved to be trickier. We then strived to correct this balance in “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” and I believe we achieved our goal.

Absolutely, it’s worth noting that Jon Watts, who directed the Spider-Man trilogy, joined the team in 2022 to co-write the story, produce, and select directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein for their unique and gruesome script pitch. With Watts on board, many horror sequels could potentially take flight.

As a film enthusiast, I often ponder: If the ‘Final Destination’ franchise hadn’t been in limbo for over a decade, would I have dived headfirst into its creative pool? Frankly, I don’t care to imagine the result, so let’s keep the predictions and premonitions out of this discussion!

Given the extensive ideas the creative team put forth in this sequel, it’s unlikely we’ll see another Final Destination installment among upcoming horror films, particularly since lead actor Tony Todd, who gave a touching performance in the sixth film, is not expected to return.
