As a lifelong DC fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Clayface movie! The fact that James Gunn has confirmed its existence within the DC Universe continuity is simply thrilling. This shape-shifting character has always been one of my personal favorites, and I’ve longed to see him portrayed in a way that does justice to his complex nature.
James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, has put an end to any speculation about possible timeline issues between the upcoming Clayface movie and Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel by saying just five words: “Clayface is in the DCU.” This means that Clayface’s story will be part of the ongoing continuity of the DC Universe, not the “Elseworlds” category where projects like Reeves’ Batman series are housed.
The upcoming release of “Clayface,” slated for September 11, 2026, is happening mere weeks before “The Batman: Part Two” hits theaters on October 2, 2026. Regarding rumors of a crossover, director Gunn has made it clear that it’s not in the cards at this time. He addressed fan theories about Clayface appearing in Reeves’ sequel, stating, “Firstly, no. Secondly, since there hasn’t been a first draft of a script yet, it couldn’t possibly happen.
The project titled “Clayface,” led by director Mike Flanagan, who is known for his work on “Doctor Sleep,” wasn’t originally part of the lineup of DC projects that were announced. In a conversation with io9, Gunn expressed that he hadn’t anticipated making a Clayface film. However, when Flanagan presented an intriguing concept, Gunn was won over, stating, “I can’t believe you’ve convinced me to want to make a Clayface movie!” The scriptwriting process began, and as Flanagan delivered excellent drafts, Gunn became more enthusiastic about the project, eventually deciding to move forward with it.
Although some speculate that the film may share ties with Reeves’ universe due to his collaboration with Lynn Harris, it is set to carve its own path. According to Deadline, the character will not be portrayed as a villain, contrary to his infamous reputation as Batman’s adversary. Flanagan has reportedly proposed the idea for the film years ago, positioning it as a blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy, offering a fresh perspective on the character within the DC Universe.
The movie is set to be part of DC’s confirmed lineup in theaters alongside “Superman” (releasing on July 11, 2025), “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (June 26, 2026), and “Dynamic Duo” (June 30, 2028). Yet, Gunn cautions fans about potential other projects that are just rumors.
He stated, “Many stories are circulating that I haven’t approved yet and I haven’t given my agreement either. Some of these tales are accurate in the sense that they’re being worked on, while others aren’t true at all. Just because a project is being developed doesn’t necessarily mean it will become a film. There are many things people appear to be banking on, but it might not be wise to rely on them.
The movie titled “Clayface” is scheduled for a theater release on September 11, 2026, whereas the sequel to “The Batman,” known as “The Batman: Part Two,” is set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
