I’m thoroughly enamored with James Gunn‘s work within the DC Universe. Both “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” were outstanding, masterfully blending complex characters, action, and storyline in a captivating manner. Similarly, “Creature Commandos” was equally impressive; the final episode had me tearing up, and the series did an exceptional job of laying the groundwork for what appears to be an intriguing new DC Universe landscape. I’m not the only one who can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
It’s clear that Gunn has a profound affection for DC, which is evident in everything he creates. As another admirer of DC, I humbly ask the filmmaker: could we please see Earth-Two integrated into the DC Universe? In fact, I believe he should fully embrace the era prior to the Crisis and delve into it. There are numerous compelling reasons for this approach. I’m convinced that the audience is now ready for a genuine superhero franchise multiverse, and Earth-Two is an ideal starting point.
Earth-Two Is the Best Alternate Earth in Comics
These days, multiverse theories are quite trendy. However, they aren’t always utilized effectively. Introducing Earth-Two into the DCU, together with the pre-Crisis multiverse, might at last demonstrate to people the potential of a multiverse in superhero narratives. Earth-Two is where the Justice Society of America resides; it was in this world that the era of superheroes started back in 1938 when Superman decided to reveal himself to the public. This world has decades worth of superhero lore, which could serve as rich material for movies and TV series.
As a film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: On the alternate world of Earth-Two, the heroes aren’t mere doubles of familiar faces; they are unique characters in their own right. Jay Garrick, my Flash, embodies the essence of the superhero; Wildcat is the rough-and-tumble guy with a golden heart; Hawkman, an ancient warrior; Starman, the blueprint for every scientist superhero to follow; the Spectre, a supernatural force striving to recall its human past; Johnny Thunderbolt, our spirited mascot; Sandman, the detective; Hourman, a man addicted to his power-inducing pills; Black Canary, the woman who can outfight most men; and Mister Terrific, the genius who snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. Earth-Two’s Batman is a brighter, happier take on the Dark Knight, a Bruce Wayne who resisted the gloom of Gotham City and eventually wed Catwoman. Earth-Two Superman is my favorite variant, a man for the people who didn’t only battle supervillains but also fought against corrupt officials and those misusing power. Earth-Two Wonder Woman stands as a champion of peace and truth, a trait often overlooked in more contemporary portrayals.
Among these characters, any could have fascinating adaptations. For instance, Alan Scott grappling with his sexuality during the 30s and 40s presents a rich backdrop for a film or TV series (as demonstrated in the current comic series). Hourman’s struggle with his addiction to Miraclo and his superhero duties offers a distinct perspective on superheroes. Additionally, you could simply adapt Sandman Mystery Theater, a detective thriller starring the Sandman. The success of The Penguin suggests that Sandman Mystery Theater has the potential to surpass it. A Justice Society film screams “blockbuster,” and pursuing this path allows the DCU to create crossover movies between heroes and villains from different worlds. This direction leads us to a significant point in DC history: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
One day, the DC Universe (DCU) may find itself at a turning point akin to Marvel’s “Infinity War/Endgame,” and the journey toward this climax will be marked by the introduction of Earth-Two. Integrating the DC Multiverse via Earth-Two opens up opportunities for the DCU to explore unique superhero narratives that differ significantly from their previous tales, and it lays the foundation for exciting developments in the future. The advent of Earth-Two paves the way for other worlds, such as Earth-Three, where evil prevails, to follow suit. We could soon encounter Earth-X, a world where the Axis Powers emerged victorious during World War II, with the Freedom Fighters being the only resistance. The DCU’s multiverse offers an endless wellspring of intriguing concepts that have already proven successful in comic books and are now primed for live-action adaptations.
Earth-Two in the DCU Is a Win-Win
In my view, the DC Universe is heading towards an appropriate pathway. Known for their fantastical and peculiar stories, DC Comics truly embody this spirit with titles like Creature Commandos. The current slate of the DCU is taking steps in promising directions that highlight the vast array of tales DC Comics has to offer. I believe delving deeper into Earth-Two and adopting a pre-Crisis approach could further strengthen this direction.
The DC Universe needs to establish its unique identity against Marvel right away, and Earth-Two offers a perfect opportunity for this differentiation. With superhero movies at risk of becoming formulaic, the most effective strategy seems to be avoiding the well-trodden paths. From my perspective, that’s what Earth-Two represents.
Creature Commandos is streaming on Max. The first DCU film release will be Superman on July 11th.
