Why James Gunn’s Decision to Cut Nova Made Guardians of the Galaxy a Masterpiece

In some team versions and playing a significant role in Marvel’s cosmic stories, Richard Rider/Nova wasn’t included in James Gunn’s version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The initial Guardians squad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe consisted of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. Later films expanded this team with Nebula, Mantis, Cosmo, and Kraglin. Yondu Udonta, who was a founding Guardian in the comics, appeared in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but his film character leans more towards an antihero.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), while the character Nova himself did not appear in Guardians of the Galaxy or elsewhere, his organization, the Nova Corps, and their home planet Xandar, were prominently featured in the first movie. Ever since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating when and where this character might make an appearance. It’s been rumored that Marvel Studios is exploring the possibility of a Disney+ series centered around Nova. Previously, Brad Winderbaum, Head of Television at Marvel Studios, expressed his desire for such a show, saying: “Ideally, you need to create these opportunities, but I would certainly love to see a Nova series someday.

Regrettably, the Nova series was put on hold indefinitely while Disney and Marvel reassessed their content approach. This raises a question: Why didn’t Nova fit well with the initial cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies? Interestingly, Gunn has an explanation for this.

James Gunn Cut 1 Member Of The Comic Guardians Of The Galaxy Team (& Explained Why)

Star-Lord Needed To Be Isolated Within The Team

In November 2024, the director, Gunn, clarified his decision to leave Nova out of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. User @_jossvillalobos inquired on Threads, “James, why didn’t you include Nova in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies?” To this, Gunn gave a straightforward explanation: “I wanted just one human character.” Notably, Star-Lord, the character he was referring to, is only half-human. However, neither the audience nor the character were aware of this during the initial movie.

Remarkably, Gunn’s rule that the team consisted of just one human character led to alterations in other characters as well. In certain comic versions, Drax and Mantis were humans. It appears this creative decision was aimed at intensifying Peter’s feelings of loneliness and prolonged mourning for his mother.

I’m Convinced Guardians Of The Galaxy Would Have Been A Weaker Trilogy For More Than One Reason Had Nova Been In The Original Team

A significant part of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies revolves around Star-Lord’s complex emotions stemming from his childhood experiences. Abducted by aliens on the very day his mother passed away due to cancer, Peter grew up and matured under the care of Yondu and the Ravagers. Despite Yondu treating him in a way that suggested a fatherly bond, he was self-centered, grasping for wealth, and not particularly expressive with affection.

From a challenging childhood, marked by not knowing his biological parent, Star-Lord developed a low self-esteem. Being the main character in the initial movies, this aspect is crucial. The director’s decision to keep the human characters minimal underscored Peter’s feeling of isolation and disconnection. This was amplified by also making him an outsider. Furthermore, it provides insight into why he was easily influenced by his father, Ego, who later exploited these vulnerabilities.

The unique composition of the Guardians of the Galaxy team, featuring no more than one human member, significantly expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s scope and made the film feel even more immersive by offering a setting unlike any other Marvel movie at that time. By having fewer humans in key roles, the movie conveyed an alien atmosphere that set it apart from the primarily human cast of The Avengers.

Nova Could Still Join The MCU Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Nova Television Series Being Put On Indefinite Hold May Hasten His Movie Debut

Leaving Nova out of the initial Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy was indeed the appropriate choice, but it doesn’t preclude him from showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or possibly joining a future version of the team. Be it Richard Rider or Sam Alexander, the character would be an excellent fit for the franchise. Interestingly, the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces a new squad comprising Rocket, Groot, Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, and Cosmo—a team that appears to lack a human member.

Postponing the television series of “Nova” is unfortunate; the character enjoys a large fanbase who eagerly anticipate his inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Yet, opting to prioritize quality over quantity could potentially pave the way for Nova’s appearance in a future film, whether it be a standalone production or a “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel.
