2025 seems poised to be the year of Superman, and I’m completely on board with that. The unveiling of the trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie has sparked excitement among comic book enthusiasts and cinephiles alike, making them more eager than ever for the film. This renewed interest in the iconic character is not lost on me, as I count myself among his fans. While my fondness for Superman has fluctuated over the years, that trailer has jogged my memory about what initially drew me to the character – it feels like Gunn’s movie closely resembles a specific tale: “All-Star Superman.
Mark Waid Boiled Superman Down to His Essence for Me
The story “All-Star Superman” stands among the best Superman tales ever penned, and I dare say it’s one of the finest superhero comics, arguably even the greatest. The collaboration between Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely resulted in a narrative that brilliantly showcases everything fantastic about Superman. This work skillfully demonstrated how cool the elements DC Comics presented post-“Crisis” truly were. It’s captivating beauty is undeniable. In the second volume of the hardcover reprints, Mark Waid wrote an introduction that reveals a profound understanding of Superman’s character. Waid expressed, “Gods gain their power by making people believe in them. Superman gains his by believing in us.
Reading “All-Star Superman” really elevated my appreciation for it. It was then I fully grasped why Superman holds such a special place in my heart. Superman embodies an ideal that humanity yearns for. He’s like Sinbad, Hercules, and Arthur all rolled into one. He’s the hero we keep reinventing because he symbolizes something fundamental to us – a need humans seem to have repeatedly.
As Waid guided me, it was Morrison who once more highlighted the connection for me when I was reading “SuperGods.” In essence, Morrison emphasizes that fiction has a real-world impact. To put it another way, Morrison posited: Superman will outlast us all. Isn’t our reality surpassed by that? We bring to life the things we desire in the world, and Superman symbolizes this perfectly. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster crafted a character embodying what every human yearns for in the world. That’s someone who cares about us deeply. That’s someone who will save us from ourselves temporarily so that we can progress to the next stage. Similar to Jor-El’s statement in “Superman: The Movie,” he says, “They will join you in the sun.
The trailer for Superman was incredibly popular because it tapped into the emotion that makes everyone adore Superman. James Gunn masterfully portrays both the super and the man. He conveys the grandeur and the optimism. Throughout the trailer, there’s a persistent atmosphere that encapsulates who Superman is and what he symbolizes. Watching it gave me the same sensation I had when reading Mark Waid’s introduction to All-Star Superman Volume Two. That sense of wonder, awe, and affection is evident in the trailer. Doesn’t it just feel like Superman? It captures the essence of Superman in a way that few other things have recently, don’t you think? That’s why we appreciate it so much.
The success of Superman is pivotal, as the missteps taken with him in the DCEU, particularly by Snyder, significantly hindered that universe’s success. Given Superman’s immense influence on DC and pop culture, it’s clear when he’s not portrayed accurately. Gunn is striving to get Superman right, just as Morrison, Waid, Siegel, Shuster, Donner, Magin, Binder, and countless others have before him. In these trying times, we desperately need a symbol of hope like Superman. We require someone to inspire us, someone to believe in.
If Loving Superman Is Wrong, I Don’t Want To Be Right
Life can sometimes feel harsh and unforgiving, a sentiment we’re all familiar with as we scroll through our phones. We often find humor in the fear that seems to permeate every moment of existence, regardless of political leanings. Yet, amidst the gloom, there is a beacon of hope – Superman. For over eight decades, countless individuals – writers, artists, editors, directors, actors, film crews, special effects teams, and many more – have united to weave tales about this divine figure who cares for us. We’ve accumulated countless hours of this alien from another world, this titan capable of ruling over us, yet instead choosing to love us, fight for us, and strive to empathize with us.
Perhaps if Superman aspires to emulate our qualities, it’s a sign that we aren’t all that flawed. Maybe there’s still some light and warmth left amidst the darkness and coldness. Maybe the negativity won’t ultimately prevail. After all, Superman represents the best in us, so if he can improve, so can we. It stirs something within us – a belief that if we can create a better Superman, we can transform our world as well.
James Gunn’s Superman opens in theaters July 11th.
