As a seasoned observer of athletic excellence, I must say that watching Team USA’s gymnastics performance at the Olympics was nothing short of breathtaking. Simone Biles, with her grace and power on every apparatus, is a testament to the relentless pursuit of perfection that athletes embody. Her ability to soar through the air during the vault competition, and the poise she displayed on the uneven bars, was truly awe-inspiring.
Jordan Chiles is taking one for the team.
After the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, consisting of Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, clinched the gold medal in the team final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 30, Jordan opted to not participate in the individual all-around competition scheduled for Aug. 1.
Despite earning a high enough score to gain entry (finishing fourth overall in the women’s qualifier on July 28), the International Gymnastics Federation’s policy of only allowing two gymnasts per country means that Simone and Suni will be the representatives from the United States in the upcoming all-around competition.
However, Jordan did qualify for the floor final Aug. 5.
For quite some time, the “two athlete rule” has had an impact on Team USA. During the individual competition in 2012, athletes like Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas were selected to represent the country, while Jordyn Wieber, unfortunately, was unable to compete due to this rule. In the summer games that followed in Rio de Janeiro, a similar situation occurred: Gabby was not included in the event, giving way to Aly and Simone Biles, who was new to the team at the time.
Although Jordan, who participated in the team final for the bars, beam, vault, and floor events, won’t be taking home a medal at this specific competition, she undeniably secured a gold medal for the U.S. in the team final with her impressive performance. Despite a minor mistake on the beam, she impressed everyone, particularly receiving a standing ovation from the audience that included Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, Nicole Kidman, and Jordan’s parents, Gina Chiles and Timothy Chiles.
In a heartbeat, I’d know just what to say when my beloved gymnast daughter stumbled on that beam. It wasn’t about cheering for the victory, but reminding her of her strength and resilience, whispering words that would help her rise again, stronger than before.
From the stands, Gina encouraged her daughter, saying, “It’s okay, sweetheart, don’t fret over it.” Her advice was, “Keep pushing forward.”
In the end, Team USA clinched the gold medal with a significant lead, scoring 171.296 points, leaving Italy and Brazil behind with scores of 165.494 and 164.497 respectively.
Alongside their ranking, Team USA demonstrated that they are fully committed not only to winning but also to enjoying the experience as well.
Jordan shared with the New York Times in 2021 that she found gymnastics doesn’t necessarily require rigidity, self-criticism, and constant self-doubt. Instead, she experienced a shift in perspective when she watched Simone compete – her joy, laughter, and apparent lack of stress or exhaustion inspired Jordan to try enjoying the sport for herself and see what happened.
