Why Josh Gad Regrets Using His Voice for Frozen's Olaf

As a die-hard Josh Gad fan, I can’t help but admire his humility and candor about his most iconic role – Olaf from Disney’s Frozen. It’s fascinating to see how a character that brought so much joy to millions of children (and adults) has become an unwanted constant in his everyday life.

Josh Gad wishes he could let this go.

Josh is recognized for his acting abilities in theater and cinema, but it’s his portrayal of snowman Olaf in Disney’s 2013 animation “Frozen” and its 2019 sequel “Frozen II” that has brought him the most fame. As he reflects on this iconic role, there’s one aspect he wishes he could alter.

During his talk at Fan Expo Canada on September 12 (as captured in TikTok videos), Josh shared with the audience, “Given another chance, I wouldn’t have given my voice to that snowman. Instead, I’d have come up with a new one.

He clarified that the challenge lies in the fact that his voice is extremely identifiable as the voice of the frosty character who adores summer.

He found it quite unusual to be in a grocery store when a small child turned their head slowly, as if imitating him, which he later realized was his first major blunder.

Nevertheless, the 43-year-old expresses gratitude for the appreciation of the special warmth he offers. He also mentions that whenever possible, he tries to share this warmth with others.

Josh has always been transparent about his strong bond with Olaf in the past. In reality, his daughters Ava, 13, and Isabella, 10 – whom he shares with wife Ida Darvish – used to request him to avoid using his Olaf character voice during bedtime stories when they were younger.

In a conversation with Stephen Colbert in 2017, Josh stated, “‘Read as daddy,’ they said, and he replied, ‘Not as Olaf.’ My response was, ‘I can’t tell the difference between the two roles.’

As he jokingly noted, “Nobody wants to be me, not in my household. It’s sad.”

His well-known voice often attracts attention when he’s out in public with his children, which on occasion results in less desirable interactions with fans.

In the year 2019, he shared with People that there was a situation where I was attempting to warn my child about an unsafe action. During this instance of genuine, unfiltered parenting, a child approached me and asked if Olaf was upset with his daughter.

Josh went on, explaining that the child seemed bewildered because there were multiple aspects to unravel.

He mentioned some common questions children ask him when they realize his on-screen character: “Why do you sound like that man?”, “Does Olaf have any children?”, and “Are you pretending to be someone else?”. He’s frequently recognized by his voice, he added.
