Regrettably, Justin Timberlake didn’t re-introduce his sexiness at Studio 8H during the 50th Anniversary Special of Saturday Night Live.
At the February 16th event celebrating 50 years of the popular sketch comedy series, Saturday Night Live, the artist known for hits like “Cry Me a River” and memorable digital shorts such as “D–k in a Box”, “Motherlover”, and “Omeletteville” was not present.
However, Justin’s schedule had a legitimate explanation – he was in the midst of a global tour, which prevented him from attending. (Notably absent from the audience were Dan Aykroyd, Bill Hader, Dana Carvey, among others.)
As a die-hard devotee, I can’t help but reminisce about my journey with Saturday Night Live (SNL). Ever since I graced its stage for the first time back in 2000 as an N*SYNC member and our group performed as the musical guests, it’s been a magical ride. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of hosting this iconic show five times – in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, and most recently in 2013. Being part of the SNL Five-Timers Club is a dream come true for me!
Since that time, the father to children Silas, age 9, and Phineas, age 4, together with wife Jessica Biel, has graced SNL multiple times with memorable performances. He’s even shared the stage with close friend Jimmy Fallon in skits such as “The Barry Gibbs Talk Show” and “Wrappinville.
During his stint on the program, Justin Timberlake received four Emmy Awards. One of these was for the category of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, which he won in 2007 for “D–k in a Box”. He also secured this award again four years later, this time for his opening monologue. Additionally, Timberlake was awarded the title of Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series in 2009 and 2011 for his contributions to SNL.
Beyond his on-screen contributions, it’s interesting to note that Timberlake was instrumental off-camera too, particularly in the context of SNL. More precisely, he played a significant part in crafting the “Single Ladies” sketch for Beyoncé in 2008.
In the recently released documentary titled “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” as Timberlake recounted, Andy Samberg sent him an impressive proposal via text message.
In my own words, I’d say: “Bobby Moynihan proposed an amusing sketch concept where the three of us would be Beyoncé’s backup dancers who didn’t make the final cut. This idea struck me as hilarious when Timberlake shared it, and he agreed! He even suggested full leotards for the act. I found this proposal too funny to pass up, so we decided to go ahead with it.
As for how Bey felt about it?
Timberlake mentioned that she appeared quite polite but was clearly reluctant about it. To put it another way, when he says hesitant, he means she wasn’t interested at all. He found himself wondering if she realized how hilarious this would turn out to be, and how well-received the entire moment would become.
He went ahead and donned the leotard, heels, and stockings, then added a robe. “I strolled up to her door, dropped the robe, and stood there with my hands on my hips,” he said. “She exclaimed in surprise, ‘You didn’t!’
And it did the trick.
