Kim Kardashian isn’t sure she would survive in the Regency era—especially after the 2024 Met Gala.
In May, a bold fashion statement was made by the star of the Kardashians family at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She donned a metallic Maison Margiela gown featuring floral print, which accentuated her hourglass silhouette due to its waist-tightening lace corset. Although the silver-toned dress beautifully complemented the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme, the experience of wearing it was less than glamorous.
Kim remarked to hairstylist Chris Appleton and designer John Galliano during her preparations for the event, “Though I may appear quite uneasy, rest assured I’m not as uncomfortable as you might think.” She added, “This is more of a theatrical display. Truly, kudos to the cast of Bridgerton, dressing like this every day must be challenging.
However, the discomfort caused by wearing the corset soon became quite intense during the limo journey towards the event. She even confided in her friend LaLa Anthony, expressing that she had never experienced such agony before in her life.
In that particular instance, she mentioned she has a fear of confined spaces, something she had never experienced before, feeling as if she couldn’t get enough air.
In fact, the outfit caused quite a stir because of how tightly it constricted her waist. However, despite the 44-year-old’s intention to slip away just before dinner to escape the uncomfortable dress, she was unexpectedly delayed.
She went on to say, ‘I can endure it for a while, but then I need to use the restroom, I feel suffocated, and I can’t remove this thing. So, in that moment, it felt like if you don’t take it off me instantly, I might die.’
At the close of the evening, she lastly unfastened the dress, taking off the corset to disclose some quite pronounced indentations etched into her skin. Earlier on in the night, her mother, Kris Jenner, playfully teased Kim about her dedication to fashion, suggesting she’d go to such lengths for a style statement, potentially compromising her own comfort.
Do you think you’ll ever wear a dress to the Met that allows for walking, you joked. I wouldn’t know how to react if I saw you strolling into the Met in an ordinary dress.”
Here’s another one:
“Ever consider donning a dress at the Met that lets you walk about, you mused? I’d be taken aback if I spotted you striding into the Met in a regular frock.
Regardless of the unease it brought about, Kim couldn’t help but acknowledge its stunning appearance on the red carpet. When queried whether it was worth the trouble, her response was a resounding, “Absolutely yes!
“That’s just who I am,” she added. “If you look good, it’s all worth it.”

Kim adorned a Maison Margiela gown inspired by the “Garden of Time”, layered with a somewhat contentious “boyfriend” sweater. Despite her comments about mastering breath control being an art within the constrictive dress, she confidently asserted, “but I managed it.
On the first Monday of May in 2022, Kim attended the Met Gala alongside her then-boyfriend Pete Davidson. Notably, she walked the red carpet in a gold gown that Marilyn Monroe had worn back in 1962 during her performance of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy. This iconic dress held significant historical value and couldn’t be modified, so Kim shed 16 pounds over a three-week period to fit into it.
She shared with Vogue that her routine included wearing a sauna suit twice daily, running on the treadmill, eliminating all sugar and carbohydrates from her diet, and only consuming the purest vegetables and proteins. However, she clarified that she didn’t resort to starvation but instead followed a very strict diet.
To emulate Marilyn Monroe for the 2022 Met Gala, Kim decided to lighten her signature brunette locks, devoting a total of 10 hours before the event. In a YouTube video posted by Kylie Jenner, Kim humorously commented on the extensive dye job, “I’m willing to risk losing my hair over it.
At the 2021 Met Gala, not only was Kim difficult for Anna Wintour to recognize due to her Balenciaga outfit, but this complete ensemble also hindered Kim from writing down Pete Davidson’s phone number, a former boyfriend of hers, during that event.
She remembered that she encountered him at the Met, and although it wasn’t public knowledge yet, she was hosting SNL. He approached her for a chat about SNL, but due to wearing gloves, she couldn’t access her phone during their conversation. This account was shared during an episode of Dear Media’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.
Fortunately, the couple reconnected during Kim’s SNL appearance and the rest was history.
To attain an hourglass figure in her Thierry Mugler gown at the 2019 Met Gala, themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” Kim donned a tight corset by Mr Pearl that hindered her mobility. Despite learning breathing techniques from the designer to facilitate breathability, the tightly fitted outfit prevented her from sitting comfortably, leading her to forgo using the restroom once it was put on.
In her preparations, she stated on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’, “If it ever becomes an emergency, I might need to wet myself and then have my sister clean me up.” She was serious about this. She added, “She can take care of me in that situation.
Additionally, Kim mentioned that the beads on her dress seemed to prick her from within. In jest, she commented, “They feel like cacti.
Despite the stunning gold Versace gown Kim wore at the Met in 2018 catching everyone’s eye on the red carpet, it caused issues once she was inside. A video posted on her social media revealed that the sequins on the dress kept snagging on other people’s clothes, especially the tulle skirt of fellow guest SZA.
In the video, she playfully remarked, “As soon as my gown links with yours,” pointing out their arms intertwined amidst the mess of tangled fabric while helpers struggled to disentangle them. “Seems like fate has us joined at the hip!
Before the 2016 gala, Kim didn’t have much chance to rest and rejuvenate due to her busy schedule. Specifically, after arriving in New York at 1 a.m., she met with designer Olivier Rousteing for a fitting. They worked together, modifying skirts into tops, creating new garments from dresses, and staying up until 4 a.m. to finalize the best choice that aligned with the event’s theme.
The outcome was a striking, futuristic metallic dress that beautifully complemented the theme “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Era of Technology.
Kim remarked, “Preparing for something as significant as this requires a lot of effort; it’s truly a collaborative task.
The SKIMS mogul later called bleaching her eyebrows for the look a “big mistake.”
During her first trimester of pregnancy with their second child, son Saint West (with ex Kanye West), Kim attended the 2015 Met Gala alongside her then-partner. To conceal her baby bump, she wore a shimmering, semi-transparent Roberto Cavalli dress. Following the event, she revealed on her app, “I was attempting to hide it.
Before Kim had even set foot on the red carpet at the 2014 Met Gala, her outfit was already stirring up some controversy. Not only did Kim experience a wardrobe malfunction in her high-slit Lanvin gown during her journey to the Met, but the thick belt and leather bracelets she initially paired with the dress were deemed too edgy for her liking.
To ensure she looked perfect for the camera, Kim discarded her accessories from the car and replaced them with a sleek black satin belt instead.
