Why Lily-Rose Depp Doesn’t Regret Starring in The Idol Amid Criticism

As a seasoned viewer of television shows and movies, I must say that the lineup for January 2023 looks absolutely splendid! From the return of familiar faces like Adam Levine on The Voice, to the thrilling escapades of Rob Lowe’s game show, there seems to be something for everyone.

Lily-Rose Depp is pulling back the curtain on her time on The Idol.

Following her role in the notorious TV show, which she shared screen time with The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye), who jointly created it with Sam Levinson, the 25-year-old embraced all the conversations and is content with her choice to be the main character of the explicit series.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, published on November 21st, Lily-Rose expressed her genuine affection for the project, saying, “I truly adore it.” She continued, “As creators, you strive for people to appreciate your work and connect with it. We knew that not everyone would like it, and that it might be too intense for some. However, we are proud of our decisions and the direction we chose to take.

In a different role, Lily-Rose Depp took on the part of Joselyn, a troubled pop star who found herself under the management of Tedros (portrayed by The Weeknd), a club promoter who ultimately transformed her life and career. This brief series ignited debates across social media platforms each week, as critics pointed out its explicit content and narrative. However, Lily-Rose personally witnessed that many people enjoyed it, beyond the online sphere.

The daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis expressed her thoughts in a simpler manner: “I’m always happy when people approach me and say they enjoy ‘The Idol.’ It’s nice to find someone who appreciates it. I don’t mind if it doesn’t appeal to everyone, that’s part of its charm.” She added, “I feel close to Sam and Ashley [Levinson]. They’re like family to me. I look forward to the opportunity of working with them again in the future.

Reflecting on the journey, I must admit it was a pivotal moment for me. The joy I derived from creating it was immeasurable. It served as an enlightening phase where I discovered aspects of myself I hadn’t known before. I danced, I sang, and I explored skills that were entirely new to me. It was a period of growth like no other. Now, when I look back, all I can feel is warmth and pride for what it has become.

The events surrounding “The Idol” started unfolding not long after its announcement in 2021. Following its approval, there were changes in the storyline and showrunners, the initial air date was postponed, and a report by Rolling Stone claimed that individuals who signed up for one project were instead assigned to another – a claim that stirred controversy due to potential mismanagement.

On the other hand, Lily-Rose and the other main cast members were well-prepared for any criticism or feedback that might come their way.

She mentioned that it was challenging to avoid the intense discussion surrounding the topic, but she had anticipated this response. They deliberately tackled aspects intended to be surprising, outrageous, and unique. So when people commented, “This is so wild,” her team would respond with laughter, acknowledging, “Yes, indeed it is quite extraordinary.

After a contentious five-episode airing of “The Idol“, HBO revealed that the show wouldn’t continue with a second season. This decision left actress Lily Rose displeased.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, she expressed, “I truly wished I could collaborate with Sam once more. And the character deeply resonated with me.” She went on to say, “She was the role model I aspired to be at five years old. I’d dress up in my mom’s heels, emulating her – she was my childhood fantasy of a femme fatale. Therefore, I yearned to delve deeper into that character. Yet, I am confident we’ll work together again in the future, and I eagerly anticipate that moment.” She concluded, “Everything unfolds according to its own plan.

Following the last episode of “The Idol”, the actress from “Tusk” expressed her thoughts regarding the series and its creators on various social media platforms.

She expressed her gratitude on Instagram on July 4, saying “Thanks to everyone who watched, listened, shared laughter and tears with us. A big thank you goes out to our entire cast, crew, and everyone in between for their heartfelt contributions to this show. I’m deeply grateful to Sam and Abel for taking me on the wildest, most beautiful journey of my life. And to my Idol family… I love you all for eternity.
