As a dedicated follower, I can only imagine the profound pain and sorrow that Lisa Marie Presley experienced throughout her life, especially after the loss of her father and later, her son. Her unique approach to grieving, keeping Benjamin’s body close for an extended period before burial, speaks volumes about her deep connection with her loved ones and her need for closure.
Lisa Marie Presley wanted a proper grieving process.
As a dedicated follower, in my posthumous memoir titled “From Here To The Great Unknown,” completed by my daughter Riley Keough, I share the unique reasons behind preserving my son Benjamin Keough in a state of deep freeze for two months following his 2020 passing and how I drew solace from the experience of my father’s demise.
In her book, Lisa Marie stated that California does not require immediate burial, explaining her choice to keep Benjamin’s remains in a small cottage by her home. She found it comforting to have her father in the house after his death, as she could visit him and converse with him whenever she wished.
Moreover, Riley emphasized that it was crucial for her mother, who co-parents Riley, Benjamin, and Danny Keough’s ex, to have sufficient time to bid a proper farewell to him, just as she had with her father.
After Elvis passed away in 1977, when his only daughter Lisa Marie was just nine years old, he was laid to rest on the grounds of his Memphis estate, Graceland – a place she had frequented as a child. Besides grieving for her father, Lisa Marie, who lived in California prior to her passing in 2023, had another motive for preserving her son’s remains before burial: the question of whether to bury him in Memphis or Hawaii remained undecided.
Lisa Marie, who is a mother to 15-year-old twins Harper and Finley Lockwood with her ex-partner Michael Lockwood, explained elsewhere in her memoir that one reason things took so long was because she had grown accustomed to him. She continued, ‘I think it would terrify anyone else to have their son living with them as he did. But not me.’
She underscored the fact that she considered herself incredibly lucky because there was an opportunity for her to continue caring for him, postponing it slightly to allow her time to grow accustomed to the idea of saying goodbye.
In the end, Lisa Marie was compelled to release her son, as Riley found the prolonged stay of Benjamin at their property to be “preposterous.
In Riley’s memoir, due for release on October 8th, he describes a sense of unease from his brother about staying in our home. It seemed as if he was telling us, “Things are getting strange.” Even our mother admitted she felt him communicating with her, saying something like, “This is crazy, Mom, what’s going on? What’s the point?” or “What the hell!
But while Lisa Marie was eventually able to have Benjamin laid to rest near his grandfather on Graceland’s property—where she herself was also buried—Riley has shared before that her mother was never really able to work through her grief.
In an interview with People last month, Riley shared that, despite her mom’s efforts to summon strength for him and his younger sisters following Ben’s death, we could all see the immense pain she was enduring. He added that while his mom passed away as a result of complications from surgery, it was clear to everyone that she had succumbed to a broken heart.
