Why Mario Fans Are Frustrated Over a New Game Update

This week sees a variety of Nintendo games receiving updates, ranging from freshly released titles to ones that have been around for quite some time. This is attributed to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, as developers are capitalizing on the enhanced processing capabilities of the new console. While many of these updates were previously announced during the company’s grand Switch 2 unveiling livestream in April, a few have come as a surprise. Generally, these updates are well-received; however, one particular update has left Super Mario fans displeased, and for valid reasons.

The game under discussion is “Super Mario 3D All-Stars”, a collection that came out in 2020. This set includes three popular 3D games: “Super Mario 64”, “Super Mario Sunshine”, and “Super Mario Galaxy”. In an unusual decision, Nintendo made the game available for a limited period; by 2021, it had been removed from the eShop and can no longer be bought in stores. This move was met with widespread criticism four years ago, and its value on the second-hand market now ranges between $80 and $120.

Although “Super Mario 3D All-Stars” can no longer be bought officially and hasn’t been available for quite some time, Nintendo has chosen to make updates for it on the Nintendo Switch 2. As per their official website, they have made adjustments aimed at enhancing gameplay on this new system. While these changes may not appear drastic or noticeable, it is worth mentioning that the update is necessary to run the software on the new platform. It’s pleasing for those who already own “Super Mario 3D All-Stars” to see Nintendo still dedicating time to update games that are no longer easily accessible. However, for those unwilling to pay the aftermarket price, it serves as a reminder of the inconvenience this situation has caused.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel that randomly updating a game which is no longer available for purchase feels incredibly ‘Nintendo-esque’. It’s as if they’ve kept a piece of my gaming childhood alive and well!

“Almost feels disrespectful, why isn’t this on the market still,” another questioned.

The latest update on Super Mario 3D All-Stars has stirred up some old criticisms regarding Nintendo’s management of the collection, but those who own the game are expressing optimism about potential enhancements for the Switch 2. There’s conjecture that the game may now support the newly designed GameCube wireless controller for Super Mario Sunshine, or offer mouse controls for Super Mario Galaxy. Some fans even dream that the update could lead to a re-release of the game, possibly through the eShop.

At present, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and stay tuned for any announcements from Nintendo. The release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars marked a celebration of the franchise reaching its 35th year, and this year also happens to be its 40th. There’s speculation that Nintendo might take advantage of this milestone to re-release this collection once more.
