Michelle Obama is sending her condolences to late president Jimmy Carter from afar.
Following the death of the former president on December 29, when he was 100 years old, President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump, along with three other living presidents and their spouses, attended his memorial service on January 9 to express their condolences.
However, unlike former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush who were accompanied by their spouses Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, Barack Obama chose to attend the service alone. According to CNN correspondent Jeff Zeleny, Michelle was advised by her team that she had scheduling conflicts and was still in Hawaii at the time of the service.
Nevertheless, Michelle made sure to express words of comfort to the family of ex-president Carter after his passing.
In a shared message on social media on December 29th, the Obamas expressed that President Carter showed us the essence of living with elegance, honor, fairness, and altruism. Michelle and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, as well as everyone who was touched by this extraordinary individual.
The former president, who served from 1977 to 1981, is still mourned by his four children: Jack Carter, Chip Carter III, Jeff Carter, and Amy Carter, as well as eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in 2023 at the age of 96, preceding him in death.
Following the loss of his father, Chip shared a nod to his memory.
In a tribute at the Carter Center following his father’s passing, Chip expressed that his dad was not just a hero to him, but to anyone who valued peace, human rights, and selfless love. He went on to say that his siblings and he had the privilege of sharing our father with the world, as we all shared these universal values. The world, in essence, became our extended family due to how he fostered unity, and we are grateful for your commitment to upholding these cherished ideals in memory of him.
As the 39th U.S. President, Carter dedicated much of his tenure to international relations. He played a key role in finalizing the Panama Canal treaties, brokering the Camp David Accords that fostered peace between Israel and Egypt, and negotiating the SALT II agreement with the Soviet Union, which imposed restrictions on the number of nuclear weapons each country could possess.
At home, Carter granted clemency to individuals who refused military service during the Vietnam War, prioritized energy efficiency, and enacted the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment Act with the intention of maintaining an unemployment rate under 3% and a maximum inflation rate of 4%.
During his inauguration, Carter stepped out of his car and made his way towards the White House, surprising the Secret Service, as reported by the Miller Center. On this momentous day, in his speech, he declared that his main objective during his four-year term would be to strive for excellence.
He pointed out that ‘more’ doesn’t always equate to ‘better’, acknowledging that our esteemed nation too has its boundaries, and that there are some questions we can’t answer and problems we can’t solve. However, he emphasized the importance of not being hesitant in taking on new challenges as we face the future, striking a balance between prudence and ambition.
He also emphasized his goal to promote equity during his term.
During his speech, he emphasized that we’ve already achieved a significant level of personal freedom, but now we are working towards improving equal opportunities for all. He reiterated the importance of upholding human rights, ensuring our laws are just, preserving our natural wonders, protecting the weak from oppression by the powerful, and enhancing the value and respect for every individual’s dignity.
At Carter’s funeral, all living former presidents gathered together for the first time since George H.W. Bush’s funeral in 2018. Notably, many influential political figures were present at this occasion as well.
