As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for both indie gems and blockbuster spectacles, I found myself pleasantly intrigued by Barry Jenkins’ involvement with “Mufasa: The Lion King“. Initially, his decision to steer clear of Disney’s juggernaut franchise seemed understandable given his knack for introspective storytelling. However, upon reading the script during the pandemic-induced lockdown, I can confirm that my initial skepticism was misplaced.
In the world of franchises, Disney’s The Lion King stands out as one of the most cherished, with its 1994 animated debut spawning sequels, spinoffs, and even realistic reboots like 2019’s The Lion King. However, when it comes to the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King, renowned director Barry Jenkins nearly declined Disney’s most prominent franchise without even glancing at a script. Initially, Jenkins was firm in his refusal to direct The Lion King prequel, Moonlight’s helmsman.
Initially, when it was presented to me,” Jenkins shared with GamesRadar+, “I had a strong feeling about it. My agent called to say Disney had offered a prequel for The Lion King. I instantly replied, ‘That won’t work out.’ All this without even glancing at the project details!
In a seemingly unusual collaboration, renowned for intense dramas such as “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk”, Jenkins found himself partnering with Disney’s photorealistic animation. This alliance, suggested during the 2020 lockdown by his filmmaker partner Lulu Wang, initially struck him as peculiar. However, upon reading the script during that time, he was pleasantly surprised.
Jenkins expressed his surprise by stating, ‘Gosh, this is fantastic!’ around page 45. Given my extensive knowledge of The Lion King, I was taken aback by the numerous aspects I thought I understood or believed to be unchangeable about these characters.
The director additionally uncovered surprising similarities between Jeff Nathanson’s screenwriting perspective and his personal artistic passions, notably in topics surrounding “the ties that bind brothers, as well as the concept of a makeshift family, longing, community, and heritage – specifically, the hidden emotions and interactions among characters within relationships.
Transitioning from his past projects to helm a $250-million Disney production represents Jenkins’ most significant directing endeavor to date. His earlier films showcased him as a skillful storyteller of intimate tales. Following his Best Director Oscar nomination and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Moonlight, which also won Best Picture, Jenkins has consistently chosen to work on smaller, character-centric narratives.
In “The Lion King,” the story revolves around Rafiki (John Kani) who narrates the backstory of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). This tale is shared with Simba’s daughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). The plot unfolds to reveal how an orphaned Mufasa was raised by Taka’s family. However, their bond weakens as Taka morphs into the malevolent Scar.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast like myself, finding myself drawn to a film that boasts a photorealistic style but I unwaveringly classify as an animated project, this venture presented me with a refreshing array of creative possibilities that I hadn’t anticipated.
He mentioned that he’s consistently interacting with these animators who meticulously shape these almost lifelike models to convey emotions. He described it as an entirely unique tool.
On December 20th, a movie is scheduled to debut, boasting a talented lineup of actors such as Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, and Beyoncé Knowles Carter.
