Given Pixar’s reputation for innovative storytelling with their question like “What if X had feelings?”, it’s no surprise that the 2006 animated film, Cars, was a success, raking in $462 million globally and even becoming the sixth highest-grossing movie of that year. The Owen Wilson-starring movie about sentient vehicles not only dominated the box office but also spawned a media franchise, which expanded to include two sequels and the spin-off movie, Planes.

As a dedicated movie critic, I can attest that the original “Cars” (2006) was a groundbreaking film that stood out in a crowd due to its innovative concept and captivating character designs. It boasted a deeper moral narrative, much like other renowned Pixar productions, with Lightning McQueen’s transformation serving as a focal point. Thus, when the sequel to “Cars” was announced, anticipation ran high among fans eagerly awaiting the next installment in this celebrated series. However, when “Cars 2” (2011) hit theaters, despite its impressive box office performance, it received a mixed reception from critics, with some labeling it as the most disappointing Pixar sequel to date.

As someone who appreciates cinema, I’ve got to say that with a staggering budget of $200 million, “Cars 2” stands alongside blockbusters like “The Hobbit” and “Transformers.” Given such a hefty investment, one would expect nothing less than critical acclaim. However, the movie fell short of capturing the charm of its predecessor, as Mater’s random involvement in spy missions to uncover a racing conspiracy for McQueen’s races seemed disjointed. This inconsistency in plot left many viewers, including myself, disappointed. The sequel received a disappointing 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a significant drop from the original’s success. In fact, “Cars 2” was even responsible for ending Pixar’s 16-year streak of Oscar nominations, leaving behind an unfortunate legacy in the world of animation.

Cars 3 Focused On McQueen’s Legacy In The End Of An Era

After facing criticism for its sequel, Cars 3 appeared to conclude Pixar’s film series about Lightning McQueen as he grappled with newer competitors, offering a heartwarming and nostalgic tale. The underlying life lesson was more prominent in this installment, reminiscent of the original film in the franchise. Critics appreciated the storytelling in Cars 3, contrasting the perception that Pixar was merely motivated by sales (a common complaint about Cars 2). Although it had the lowest box office earnings among all Cars movies, Cars 3 proved to be a delightful and rejuvenating addition to the franchise, focusing on Lightning McQueen’s legacy, earning a significantly improved rating of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Due to the “end of an era” narrative in the movie Cars 3, there has been little news about a fourth installment for quite some time. Apart from the Cars on the Road series, many have assumed that the Pixar franchise had come to its end. However, in 2023, co-creator Jay Ward hinted on The Late Brake Show that “there are more Cars projects in the works,” and he’s currently engaged with some exciting new projects that will be released within a few years. If Cars does make a comeback, let’s hope it stays true to its original themes, avoiding sequels like Cars 2 that strayed too far from the core story.
