The latest revelations from Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” paint a picture of a deeply troubled young man who felt unheard and misunderstood by those closest to him.

The Duke of Sussex is hesitant to return his wife, Meghan, who has been married to him for six years and is the mother of their children Archie, 5, and Lilibet “Lili,” 3, to the United Kingdom. She has made only a few trips back since their move to the US in 2020, with her most recent visit being for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.
I can’t help but warn that the reports in the British tabloids about that couple are still perilous. A single unstable individual, swayed by these publications, could be provoked to take harmful actions based on the information they’ve consumed.

However, he was taken aback when William reportedly advised him to be cautious, remarking, “She’s an American actress, Harry. Anything could happen.” (According to Harry’s account of the conversation.)
In October 2016, when Harry presented his brother William to his fiancée Meghan, Harry recounted that Meghan, who is known for her affectionate nature, moved in for a hug. However, William took a step back. But according to Harry, William eventually overcame his initial surprise and exchanged some friendly words with Meghan.
At the initial gathering, Kate wasn’t present. William shared that she was occupied with taking care of their children as an explanation. In the 2022 Netflix series “Harry & Meghan,” Meghan revealed a comparable incident regarding a hug between them when they first met in early 2017. Despite this apparent frostiness, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand reported in their 2020 book “Finding Freedom” that Kate encouraged Meghan to contact her whenever she wanted, expressing empathy and understanding as a fellow royal love interest.
Currently, the British media could only guess about Harry’s prolonged relationship with Meghan. The first acknowledgment of their romance from Kensington Palace came in a statement on November 8, 2016. In the book “Finding Freedom,” a mutual friend is reported to have stated that William aimed to prevent Harry from being unexpectedly infatuated.
According to “Spare,” William attempted to back out of their planned last supper together before Harry’s wedding, as mentioned in an earlier occasion when they both looked forward to welcoming well-wishers at King Edwards Gate. (This was a day before Harry’s wedding.) This was reminiscent of the night prior to William’s own wedding when they had spent time together.

Perhaps even spend the night, as we had done before his wedding.” Yet, he replied, “I’ll attend dinner but won’t be able to stay overnight.”
Harry pondered in “Spare,” “Was Charlie resentful for not being named my best man? Was he displeased that I’d chosen my longtime friend Van Straubanzee, from our childhood days at school,” instead.
According to Harry’s account, William believed the negative tabloid stories about Meghan. After their wedding on May 19, 2018, Harry felt disappointed that his family didn’t support them, despite the confrontation. Tensions reached a boiling point during an argument between the brothers, which escalated into a heated verbal fight. During this altercation, as per Harry’s claims, William grabbed Harry by the collar and pushed him to the ground.
Harry wrote that he later told his therapist he was proud of himself for not hitting William back.
In “Harry & Meghan,” “Spare,” and during interviews, Prince Harry explained how there was a tactical back-and-forth dynamic between the royal family and the British media.
In a conversation with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, he referred to an unspoken agreement whereby specific journalists received considerable kindness from the institution, which in turn resulted in predominantly positive media exposure that was essential for the organization’s enduring success.

Following this, there were news reports suggesting that the royals were angry about the couple’s revelations. However, a representative from Kensington Palace spoke to the BBC and expressed concern for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as they appeared to be in a vulnerable state.
After taking a six-week hiatus from my professional duties to prioritize family time, including celebrating Christmas away from Sandringham and the queen’s estate, the Sussexes made an announcement on January 8, 2020. They shared their intention to step down as senior members of the royal family, move to North America, and work towards financial independence from the crown. Simultaneously, they expressed their commitment to fully support Her Majesty, the queen, in her role.
I was taken aback just like many others when news broke that the queen had been caught off guard by Harry and Meghan’s sudden announcement to step down as senior royals. But, from my perspective, there were still important matters to be addressed in private with Charles and William during an urgent royal summit we convened at her request. In recent times, my grandson William has taken on a more significant role in the monarch’s decision-making process.
William expressed regret to a friend during the negotiations, as reported by London’s Sunday Times. He shared that he had been emotionally close to his brother throughout their lives but can no longer offer that comforting embrace. They are now distinct individuals. Despite his sadness, William intends to encourage and support them, hoping for a future where they share similar goals. He wishes for everyone to be united on the team.
On January 13, 2020, Harry and William issued a unified declaration disputing a tabloid article implying that William’s supposed bullying behavior played a role in Harry and Meghan’s departure. The statement stated, “Contradicting reports appeared in a British newspaper today about the bond between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge. Though we’ve made it clear that this story is untrue, we feel compelled to address the damaging impact of such inflammatory language.” For siblings who are passionate about mental health issues, employing such provocative speech is disrespectful and could be detrimental.
Only, according to Harry, that statement was attributed to him without his knowledge.
He was taken aback in “Harry & Meghan” on Netflix, he admitted, when when someone released a statement using his name without consulting him first. This statement caused Meghan to tears, he disclosed, because within just a few hours, they were prepared to fabricate truths to shield his brother, but for three long years, they had refused to tell the truth to safeguard us instead.
After reaching an agreement on the Sussexes’ departure (retaining their titles but prohibiting their commercial usage, relinquishing UK government protection, among other points), Harry and Meghan made their last rounds in London for a week, carrying out their duties as royals.
I last attended an event with them on March 9, 2022, at Westminster Abbey, which was also the last time I was captured in photos together with Kate and William for over two years.
The COVID-19 lockdown began a few days later, keeping Harry and Meghan apart on different continents and making the formal March 31 start of their new lives rather uneventful.
During their interview with Oprah on CBS, which was broadcasted on March 7, 2021, Harry and his wife may have felt as if they were making a big splash, like dumping tea into the Pacific Ocean, but in reality, Harry held back quite a bit when discussing the issues in his relationship with William.
Harry acknowledged with Oprah, “There will no doubt be more discussions about that topic.” Regarding William, he added, “I’ve expressed before how much I care for him. He is my brother, and we’ve faced hardships together. However, our lives have taken different directions.”
Oprah asked about the status of their relationship, and he answered, “We’re taking some distance right now. I hope and believe that with time, healing will occur.”
I used to feel stuck in my old situation, not fully realizing its limitations until I met Meghan. Now, looking back, I can see how confined and trapped I once was. Sadly, my father and brother are still enduring the same circumstances. I deeply empathize with their predicament as they’re unable to escape it.
In my experience as a lifestyle expert, during their interview with Oprah, Harry and Meghan shared an shocking revelation about an inquiry they received from a family member of the royal family, whom Oprah clarified was neither the queen nor Prince Philip. They were asked to ponder over the complexion of our firstborn child before he or she was even born.
In an interview on March 9, the palace expressed sadness upon discovering the difficulties Harry, Meghan, and Archie have faced in recent years. The concerns raised, specifically those relating to race, are being given careful consideration. Although there may be differing perspectives, these matters will be privately handled by the family. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will remain cherished members of our family.
As an obsessed fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement during William and Kate’s March 11 visit to a school in London. Every question from the reporters seemed to revolve around that one topic – the interview with Harry that everyone was buzzing about. I wished I could be a fly on the wall as I watched William attempt to dodge the queries. “I haven’t had the chance to speak with Harry yet,” he admitted, “but I will.”
When a journalist inquired about allegations that the royal clan is bigoted, William firmly denied it, stating, “We most certainly do not hold racist views as a family.”
Harry and William appeared similar from a distance during Prince Philip’s funeral on April 17, 2021. Meghan, who was seven months pregnant at the time, did not attend as Harry made his first journey back to the U.K. since their last official engagement.
After his grandfather’s funeral, Harry expected to have deep conversations with his father and brother. However, he came to understand that they truly didn’t comprehend or connect with him during that moment in “Spare”.

According to Harry, Charles explained the reason being that he preferred fewer people present. No other wives were expected to attend, including Kate and Meg, hence the request for Harry to come alone.
When Harry arrived, the queen had previously departed, and though he dined with most of his relatives at Balmoral, neither his father nor brother were present to welcome him.
In Windsor, Harry and Meghan reunited with William and Kate to console mourners outside the castle for the first time since March 2020, as captured by photographers.
Instead of news about the royals being upset over Harry’s book, “Spare” received no comment or response from the palace officially.
I couldn’t help but share my perspective as an ardent fan, and Harry has repeatedly emphasized in numerous interviews that his actions weren’t intended to harm his family relationship, but rather to sweep away the dust and expose the hidden issues so we all could truly understand the depth of his pain. This turmoil, you see, dates back many years before Meghan entered the scene.
He expressed his uncertainty to ITV’s Bradby during an interview on January 8th: “Honesty might be damaging relationships, I’m not certain. You see, keeping quiet lets an abuser continue their harmful actions. So I don’t understand how remaining silent could ever improve things.”
Despite my longing for reconciliation, I can’t ignore the call for accountability. Over the years, I’ve learned to find peace with many past events. Yet, this doesn’t mean I’ll turn a blind eye to what transpired.
Despite this, Harry expressed a desire for forgiveness and the ability to forgive. He longed to reunite with his father and brother, acknowledging that their current identities were unrecognizable to each other at present.
He deeply cared for his family and this feeling would never change, he assured us. “Whatever actions I took in this book or elsewhere,” he explained, “were never meant to cause them harm or pain.”
After the publication of “Spare,” Harry spoke with The Telegraph and admitted that he had held back in writing his memoir. (Or: Harry shared with The Telegraph following the release of “Spare” that there were things he hadn’t included in his autobiography.)
He shared in an article published on Jan. 13 that there are certain events, primarily involving him and his brother, as well as to some degree between him and his father, which he prefers to keep private. He expressed concern that others might not be able to forgive him if these matters were made public.
Originally, we had an 800-page project on our hands. But with careful consideration and determination, we successfully reduced it to a manageable 416 pages. It was quite the challenge, let me tell you – we could have easily split it into two books instead. The real struggle came from deciding what to remove, not what to add.
