For directors Anna Fleck and Ryan Boden, replicating the 1990s ambiance for “Captain Marvel” was a more complex endeavor than recreating the 1980s for their upcoming film “Freaky Tales”. In an interview with ComicBook, they discussed the challenge of bringing these time periods to life on screen. Fleck pointed out that the 1990s were trickier because it felt less distant to her, as she was still a child during the 1980s but associated the 1990s with graduating from high school and venturing out on her own for the first time.
Fleck explained that the ’90s seemed harder for him as they felt less remote in time. He identified with being an adult during those years, even though he was still a teenager. Additionally, he graduated from high school in ’97, which made him feel self-reliant and independent. In contrast, the ’80s felt like a distant childhood for him, making it easier to romanticize that era.
In 2019, just prior to Avengers: Endgame, the movie Captain Marvel was launched. Set in 1995, its primary storyline revolves around Nick Fury’s initial meeting with Carol Danvers, laying the foundation for his concept of the Avengers Initiative. The film abounds with delightful ’90s nods such as a Blockbuster store and a cameo featuring Stan Lee rehearsing lines for Mallrats. Additionally, the soundtrack boasts numerous songs from the ’90s era.
Featuring an ensemble cast that boasts Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne, Tom Hanks, and others, “Freaky Tales” weaves together four connected narratives set in 1980s Oakland. This film made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, garnering mostly favorable reviews. Critics were impressed by the movie’s unique style and acting abilities displayed by the cast.
From Fleck’s point of view, it’s easy to understand; even those who were children in the ’90s found Captain Marvel’s time setting surprisingly contemporary when it was first released. Memories like Blockbuster video stores and Nerf guns still seem quite recent. It might be hard to fathom, but when viewers went to see Captain Marvel in the cinema, they were witnessing a story that unfolded 24 years earlier. This can be puzzling because typically, “period piece” evokes images of movies or shows set far back in time (such as World War II films or stories like Little Women). However, due to significant changes in our world over the past few decades, the ’90s can now be considered a period piece.
The ’90s backdrop served as an advantage for “Captain Marvel,” giving it a unique, modern twist compared to other Infinity Saga entries. It was entertaining to catch a glimpse of how S.H.I.E.L.D. functioned before Nick Fury considered forming a team of superheroes to safeguard Earth. The nostalgic appeal might have played a role in “Captain Marvel” earning over $1 billion globally; for those in the audience born in the ’90s, the movie was a nostalgic journey that sparked plenty of memories. It’s doubtful that Marvel will revisit the ’90s anytime soon, but Fleck and Boden did an excellent job portraying the era authentically in “Captain Marvel.
