As a devoted fan who has followed Riley Keough’s journey through her artistic endeavors and personal tribulations, I find myself deeply moved by her heart-wrenching narrative about her mother Lisa Marie Presley. The pain of losing a loved one is universal, but when that loss is compounded by the grief of another family member, it becomes almost unbearable. Riley’s words paint a vivid picture of a woman who was torn apart by tragedy, and yet she found the strength to help her mother in her final moments.
Riley Keough knew her mom was struggling.
A year and a few months after the unfortunate demise of Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, in January 2023, the star of Daisy Jones & The Six revealed her thoughts on why her mother’s death might have been partially caused by the passing of her brother Benjamin Keough at age 27 in 2020.
Riley expressed to People magazine on September 25th that their mother put forth tremendous effort to find resilience for Riley and her younger twin sisters Harper and Finley Lockwood following Ben’s passing. However, it was clear to everyone how deeply grieved she was inside. “My mom may have passed away due to complications from surgery,” Riley explained, “but we all felt that her heart had simply given out.
In the year 2023, Lisa, who passed away from complications related to a blockage in her small intestine after undergoing bariatric surgery, had shared her feelings of sorrow and mourning over the loss of her son before she died.
In a 2022 essay for People, Lisa wrote: “The life we were accustomed to was shattered and obliterated by Benjamin and Riley’s father’s death, who is Danny Keough. I’ve experienced more than my share of upheaval in my lifetime, yet I’ve managed to get this far. However, the loss of my precious, beautiful son? Absolutely not. Just no.
This year, it was revealed that Riley and Penguin Random House plan to release a memoir titled “From Here to the Great Unknown” by Lisa Marie posthumously on October 8th.
In a statement made last January, Riley mentioned that not many people got to truly know his mother beyond the fact that she was Elvis’s daughter. However, he considered himself fortunate as he did get to know her deeply. The process of preparing her autobiography for publication has been both an honor and a bittersweet experience for him.
In the forthcoming memoir, Lisa Marie’s personal account will dominate, while her oldest child provides additional insights.
Following in the footsteps of Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis biopic in 2022 and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla film in 2023, my forthcoming memoir promises to offer an unparalleled, intimate glimpse into the Presley family.
In conversation with People, Riley shared that her mother’s primary purpose in writing this book was fostering human connections. She expressed her wish for readers to find common ground in a deeply personal narrative about love, sorrow, loss, substance abuse, and the bonds of family.
