Why Sarah Jessica Parker Is Missing the 2025 Met Gala

We couldn’t help but wonder if Sarah Jessica Parker would be attending the 2025 Met Gala.

Prior to the grand fashion event at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as “fashion’s biggest night”, the former star of Sex and the City announced she won’t be walking up the famous steps on May 5th, not even in her Manolo Blahnik heels.

As I shared with Entertainment Tonight on May 2nd, duty calls, yet I can hardly contain my excitement! There’s a world of captivating performances waiting to unfold, and I can scarcely wait to witness everyone’s unique take on the theme and the hard work they’ve put into their assignments.

This year’s grand charity gala, led by co-chairs such as A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and honorary co-chair LeBron James, will adopt the theme “Superfine: Celebrating Black Style” and encourage a dress code of “Tailored to You”. This event is expected to ignite a wave of fashionable flair among Hollywood’s elite, inspiring them to showcase elaborate outfits, drawing from the world of menswear and tailoring.

Despite not attending this year’s Met Gala, the star of “Just Like That…” offers a glimpse into her past approach to assignments.

Parker showed great enthusiasm, expressing deep concern for it. He aspires to genuinely acknowledge the efforts of the curators and everyone who contributed to this special moment, making it memorable for all attendees.

Over the years, this 60-year-old lady has tread the renowned stairs of the Met a total of 12 times, starting from her initial appearance in 1995, wearing a timeless black velvet dress found at a thrift store. To make her debut costume even more legendary, she chose to style her own hair and makeup.

Over time, her fashion choices grew increasingly bold, with each outing showcasing something new. Last year at the Met Gala, themed “Garden of Time”, she embodied elegance in a see-through nude gown by Richard Quinn, featuring a calf-length skirt and a peek-a-boo hoop skirt through its mesh. To add to the spectacular look, she wore a grand Philip Treacy hat and Briony Raymond jewelry.

In an interview with Vogue in 2022, she shared her astonishment, stating, “Every time I visit the Met, I’m baffled that others didn’t spend at least half a year working on it.” She emphasized, “The task is to grasp the theme and give your own interpretation. It should be demanding and laborious.

At the 2021 Met Gala, everyone was talking about Kim Kardashian‘s stunning, yet unconventional appearance. Her all-black attire, designed by Demna Gvasalia, creative director of Balenciaga, was notably faceless. Interestingly enough, the material of her outfit was so thick that she couldn’t see through it!

During an interview in November 2021, Kris Jenner shared that throughout the Met Ball, Kim had trouble seeing and breathing. Kris’ boyfriend, Corey Gamble, ended up assisting Kim by guiding her and helping with her hairdo. It was as if he was pulling her around while also functioning as a hairstylist all at once.

Lil Nas X keeps showcasing his talents until he runs out of steam. At this year’s Met Gala, the musician switched costumes not once but twice. The first ensemble, a Versace suit crafted from golden armor, continues to dazzle us with its brilliance.

Rihanna consistently appears on lists due to her revolutionary fashion choices, but when she and her boyfriend A$AP Rocky walked the red carpet at the 2021 Met Gala, fans of Rihanna (known as the Rihanna Navy) went wild. It seemed destined that they would arrive near the end of the evening, as their cute appearance practically halted the red carpet traffic.

In 1996, just a year before her tragic passing, Princess Diana graced the Met Gala for the first and only time. Despite some controversy over her daring choice of attire – a navy satin slip dress inspired by lingerie, designed by John Galliano for Dior – many consider it an iconic fashion moment. Interestingly, she nearly opted for something more conservative out of concern for embarrassing her teenage son, Prince William.

Over the years leading up to 2024, only Princess Catherine (The Princess of Wales) and Princess Beatrice are the royal family members who have graced the Met Gala. It’s intriguing to speculate that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might also join this event with a spectacular appearance sometime in the future.

Every time Rihanna climbs the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the Met Gala, she creates a memorable moment in its history. Time and time again, we find ourselves in awe.

2014’s Met Gala became famous for an elevator incident involving Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange Knowles at New York City’s Standard Hotel. A video captured the altercation between Solange and Jay-Z inside the lift. Despite the lack of intervention from Beyoncé, the trio, who are usually private, released a public statement to address the incident, confirming that they continued to be a united family.

Although it’s uncertain what specifically led to the incident, Beyoncé hinted at it in her remix of “Flawless” with the lyric, “Certainly, there are times when trouble arises when a billion dollars is in an elevator.

In 2015, George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, made their first appearance at the Met Gala together. Later, in 2018, Amal took on the role as a co-chair of this high-profile event.

A week after Beyoncé released Lemonade, which illuminated her and Jay-Z’s marital difficulties, she attended the 2016 event without her regular partner. (This caused quite a stir among the Beyhive.) However, Solange was there to back her up, interestingly wearing a lemon-yellow dress on that night.

The star of the Kardashians show won’t easily forget her initial appearance at the Met Gala in 2013, as that was when the pregnant reality TV sensation stepped out with Kanye West in a striking floral dress by Givenchy. North West, their daughter, was born just a month later, and two years on, Kim joked about herself by wearing the same floral pattern for Halloween. On social media, she wrote “Still fits” to accompany the image.

In 2006, Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Alexander McQueen made a bold statement by wearing coordinating tartan ensembles at the Met Gala. This was in honor of “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion”.

Two years after the fact, my circle and I found ourselves huddled in a restroom for a clandestine photo opportunity. The outcome was nothing short of timeless – a memory frozen in time, unlikely to have involved any Kodak products.

In 2018, Madonna graced the steps of the Great Hall with an indelible performance of “Like a Prayer,” which included her rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” This spectacular show aligned perfectly with that year’s event theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Truly, it was a stairway to a heavenly spectacle.

Clad in the ultimate suit for seeking vengeance, Bella Hadid skillfully maneuvered an otherwise uncomfortable encounter with ex-boyfriend The Weeknd and his date for the 2017 Met Gala, Selena Gomez. According to a source at TopMob News, the model maintained a respectful distance from the couple during the event; however, Bella and the “Blinding Lights” artist eventually reconciled about a year later before parting ways again.

Jaden Smith made a bold fashion statement at the Met Gala in 2017 by wearing his newly cut dreadlocks as an accessory, which not only grabbed attention but also set a trend for this daring artist. At the 2016 Met Gala, Claire Danes graced the event in a shimmering light blue ball gown, reminiscent of a tech-savvy Disney princess. It was later discovered that her dress by Zac Posen, the star of ‘Homeland’, boasted thousands of carefully hand-stitched LED lights, lighting up the dance floor.

At the 2019 Met Gala themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, Lady Gaga outshone everyone else by demonstrating mastery in the art of Camp.
