Why Season 3 of Invincible Missed the Mark on Omni-Man’s Struggle

2025 saw some outstanding television seasons, and among them, Invincible’s third season truly shone! The epic battles between Mark Grayson, Conquest, Cecil Stedman, and even the dark doppelgangers from other dimensions were undoubtedly the highlights of animated combat for the year. However, amid all the earth-bound heroics, there was one aspect that could have been given more attention: Nolan Grayson’s ongoing struggle as Omni-Man. His internal conflict following his actions in season one for the Viltrumite empire is a storyline we eagerly anticipate delving deeper into.

In the second series of Invincible, Omni-Man made an unexpected comeback. Characters like Nolan appeared frequently throughout several episodes, not only reconnecting with Mark but also revealing his new life on a distant alien planet. Subsequently, Nolan was apprehended by the Viltrumite Empire and joined forces with Allen the Alien and Battle Beast in their struggle against their captors. However, the narrative didn’t delve as deeply into Nolan’s current emotional state as we anticipated. The path to redemption is a lengthy one, so we can expect Nolan’s character development to be intriguing as it unfolds.

Gone But Not Forgotten

In the third season of Invincible, though Nolan appeared less frequently compared to the first two seasons, his influence on Mark’s life was subtly conveyed in creative ways. For instance, a new villain called Powerplex, portrayed by Aaron Paul, emerged, seeking retribution against Invincible for the loss of his kin during Mark’s battle with his father in season one. It was during this episode where Powerplex first appeared that we could notice the distinct views held by Mark and Oliver regarding their father’s actions.

Due to Oliver’s absence, it’s Olliver, the half-Viltrumite brother of Mark, who ponders why people can’t find it in their hearts to forgive Omni-Man. Conversely, Mark continues to struggle with forgiving his father for the numerous lives lost under his allegiance to the Viltrumites. Despite never physically returning to Earth, Nolan’s influence lingers during the onslaught of evil Mark Graysons plaguing the planet.

Just Like The Comics

In accordance with the original storyline, Nolan’s scarcity in this context mirrors Omni-Man’s successful escape with aid from Allen and Battle Beast. For those who follow Invincible, expect an increased presence of Nolan in the coming episodes, along with some unexpected reunions that will take everyone by surprise. With Robert Kirkman revealing that season 4 will introduce a new storyline exclusive to the series, it’s intriguing to speculate if this dark narrative could potentially pave the way for Nolan’s comeback, an opportunity we didn’t witness during the Image comic run.

Thankfully, fans won’t need to endure such a long wait for season four of Invincible compared to previous seasons. Currently, Kirkman is aiming for the animated series to span approximately eight seasons, covering all the comic book events. This suggests that we can look forward to more Omni-Man and J.K. Simmons’ depiction of him in the future.
