As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating Tudor crime drama, Shardlale, is now available to stream on ITVX! And get ready, it’s also starting its broadcast on ITV1. This gripping series was initially produced and premiered on Disney Plus last year. Don’t miss out on this historical mystery unfold!
The television series consists of four episodes that are inspired by the initial novel within a sequence written by the late author CJ Sansom. There have been discussions about potentially adapting additional novels for more seasons.
Unfortunately, this year began with disappointing news for fans, as it was announced that the series featuring Arthur Hughes, Sean Bean, and Anthony Boyle would no longer be airing.
Why was the choice made that the series wouldn’t come back for a second season, and what was the initial concept behind it?
Delve into this text for comprehensive insights as to why a second season of Shardlale is not forthcoming.
Why won’t there be a Shardlake season 2?

Unfortunately, we won’t get another season featuring our character Shardlake, as Disney+ officially announced his series has been cancelled back in January.
It has been declared that the third season of Disney+’s original series “Extraordinary” will no longer air on their platform, as confirmed by a Disney Plus representative to Variety through a statement.
We’re absolutely thrilled about the side-splitting, award-winning series that the exceptionally gifted team from Britain and Ireland – our production collaborators at Sid Gentle Films, and the ingenious writer Emma Moran – have brilliantly brought to life.
The Disney+ Original series, Shardlake, will not be renewed for a second season on their platform. We’d like to express gratitude towards Stephen Butchard for his exceptional work in adapting the late C.J. Sansom’s beloved novel, as well as Arthur Hughes and the entire cast and crew, along with our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge.
“We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future.”
It’s unofficially suggested that the cancellation might be due to the viewership numbers falling short of what the streamer anticipated.
Prior to its cancellation, there was a strong intention from the team involved in the production to transform the upcoming book in CJ Sansom’s series, titled “Dark Fire”, into the subsequent show episode.
What would Shardlake season 2 have been about?

In all probability, if Shardlake had another season, it most likely would have been drawn from the second book in Sansom’s series titled “Dark Fire”.
1540, England. Trying to avoid the notice of Thomas Cromwell due to being out of favor, Matthew Shardlake prefers to stay out of court affairs. However, when he becomes embroiled in a murder case, defending a young woman accused of brutally slaying her cousin, it brings him back into contact with Cromwell and a new task.
For centuries, the secret recipe behind Greek Fire, a legendary substance used by the Byzantines to sink Arab fleets, has remained hidden. Recently, an employee at the Court of Augmentations stumbled upon this secret in the library of a disbanded monastery. When Shardlake is tasked with retrieving it, he discovers both the official and his alchemist brother brutally slain – the formula nowhere to be found.
Currently, Shardlake is pursuing the path of Greek Fire through the heart of Tudor London, all the while working tirelessly to uphold his youthful client’s integrity. However, it won’t take long before he uncovers that not everything is as it appears…
Unfortunately, it appears that the fans will not have a chance to witness the adaptation of Dark Fire, at least not with this storyline or these actors involved.
