Why Star Trek: Picard’s 10 Forward Bar Retcon Still Doesn’t Add Up After 3 Years

In the new series Star Trek: Picard, they revamped the 10 Forward lounge that was initially presented in Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, the alteration seemed confusing to me. Back in 1987, TNG debuted with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew onboard the USS Enterprise-D. This team of characters grew to be one of the most adored starship crews within the Star Trek universe, as they formed a sort of family among themselves and with the audience. The Enterprise-D included a lounge and bar area named Ten Forward, where crew members could unwind during their leisure time, helping viewers get to know the characters better.

In the year 2020, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Jean-Luc Picard in the series “Star Trek: Picard,” set approximately two decades after the events depicted in “Star Trek: Nemesis.” The first season of “Picard” introduced a new group of characters along with Jean-Luc, yet some familiar faces eventually made appearances. In season 2 of “Picard,” Whoopi Goldberg’s character Guinan reappeared, serving as the bartender at a Los Angeles establishment situated on 10 Forward Avenue. In the year 2401, Picard pays a visit to Guinan at this bar, and in the year 2024, he encounters a younger version of Guinan (played by Ito Aghayere) at the same location.

3 Years Later, Star Trek: Picard’s 10 Forward Bar Retcon Doesn’t Make Sense

Guinan’s 10 Forward Avenue Bar Existed In The 21st & 24th Centuries

In Los Angeles, a bar called 10 Forward Avenue is named as a tribute to Star Trek’s Enterprise-D Ten Forward. However, given that Ten Forward was located on Deck 10 of the forward section 1 on the Enterprise, the name seems confusing since it doesn’t reflect this in real life. In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Guinan served as the enigmatic bartender aboard the Enterprise, providing counsel to Captain Picard and his crew for six seasons. Although it would have been fitting for Guinan to open a bar inspired by Ten Forward following her service on the Enterprise-D, it seems illogical that such an establishment would exist in today’s 21st century.

In a rather unlikely turn of events, it seems Guinan might have intentionally established her bar on 10 Forward Avenue in some past era, perhaps anticipating or sensing that she would eventually manage the Ten Forward lounge aboard Starship Enterprise. This theory doesn’t exactly make sense, but given the plotlines in Star Trek: Picard, it appears to be the only plausible explanation for having two 10 Forwards in existence.

10 Forward Has Become Useful For Paramount+ To Promote Star Trek In The Real World

Some Lucky Star Trek Fans Got To Visit 10 Forward Avenue

Creating 10 Forward Avenue has offered Paramount+ an engaging method to publicize “Star Trek”, as this location is simpler to replicate in reality compared to a starship bridge. In March 2022, Paramount transformed the USC Roski Graduate Building in downtown LA into 10 Forward Avenue for special events promoting “Star Trek: Picard” season 2. This temporary bar was operational for ten days and allowed fans to view the new set, taste Star Trek-inspired drinks, and buy exclusive merchandise.

10 Forward Avenue, reminiscent of Star Trek’s iconic setting, was showcased at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022 to boost interest in the Star Trek Universe on Paramount+. In 2025, the set from Star Trek: Picard’s 10 Forward Avenue reemerged as part of the Star Trek experiences during Universal Fan Fest Nights. This event takes place on selected nights between April 25 and May 18, 2025, and includes a tour of the actual Enterprise-D bridge set from Picard season 3. Essentially, while the modern incarnation of 10 Forward Avenue may seem incongruous, it’s offered fans some enjoyable experiences within the Star Trek: Picard location.
