It appears that the Russo Brothers, due to their remarkable box office earnings from directing major and widely-loved movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have essentially been given free rein in their directorial pursuits moving forward.
Since leaving the superhero series, where they’ll soon reappear in two more Avengers movies, they’ve been given multiple high-budget projects and have had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned actors in cinema to materialize their ideas.
As for whether they’ve spent that money wisely… well, that’s a different matter.
The duo’s initial project following their work with the Avengers was the unsuccessful film “Cherry,” a boisterous and overblown flop featuring Tom Holland as a young man who succumbed to opioid addiction after serving as an army medic in Iraq. Following this, they released “The Gray Man,” a spy thriller filled with star power, but its aim to launch a new franchise has yet to yield any significant results nearly three years later. Lastly, there’s the expensive Amazon Prime Video series “Citadel” – one of the priciest television productions ever made, but apparently lacking any impact on popular culture whatsoever.

Despite some setbacks, these brothers are still seen as reliable by Hollywood producers. In fact, their recent Netflix production, “The Electric State,” a dystopian sci-fi adventure, was another costly endeavor, with an impressive budget of $320 million allocated for its production.
Spending such an amount, you’d expect something extraordinary. However, while boasting some striking visual effects and a few amusing scenes here and there, The Electric State still falls flat as another forgettable and unremarkable piece – one that seems overly familiar and lacks a distinct personality of its own.
I, Millie Bobby Brown, take on the role of Michelle, a character whose life unfolds just before the brink of a war between humans and robots. In the opening scenes, I’m introduced as a young woman grappling with this impending conflict. Time passes, and I find myself grieving for my lost brother Christopher, who appears to have met his end. However, an unexpected visitor arrives at my doorstep – a robot with ties to my deceased sibling that I never could have foreseen.

It quickly becomes evident that her brother is not just alive, but appears to be operating the robot (named Cosmo). This robot informs her that Christopher is being kept against his will as part of a wicked scheme. Consequently, they embark on a journey through the war-torn southwestern United States, encountering potential allies in the form of smuggler Keats, portrayed by Chris Pratt, and his captivating robot Herman, voiced by Anthony Mackie.
The movie is based on a graphic novel titled the same by Simon Stålenhag, which gained much praise for its dark atmosphere and pessimistic view of human-tech relationships. With Stålenhag’s approval, the Russo brothers have made significant alterations to the original story and tone – shifting both the plot and overall feel of the work. The dystopian world presented appears to be noticeably less gritty and disturbing as a result.
The changes made from the original novel seem designed to make it more suitable for family viewing, with an Amblin-like feel, but unfortunately, this results in a movie that feels quite lightweight instead. Many moments of genuine emotion and tension are spoiled by casual remarks and repetitive humor, which is common in today’s big-budget films. The end result is a film that tries to emulate better movies without the heart or creativity to make those comparisons work effectively.
The movie predominantly serves as an appeal to spectators, encouraging them to set technology aside and cherish human relationships instead. Although this message is admirable and likely resonates with many viewers, it can seem insincere when considering that the film appears to have been crafted with the Netflix recommendation system in focus.
Given this combination – with the stellar lineup that features Stanley Tucci, Ke Huy Quan, and Giancarlo Esposito – it’s almost guaranteed to be one of the top shows on the streaming platform for several weeks.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that given this budget, I was anticipating a bit more than what we’ve got.
