Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is often seen as the pinnacle for book-to-film transitions, efficiently compressing more than a thousand pages into roughly ten hours without any significant loss. However, the success of The Lord of the Rings has become both its strength and weakness, as Warner Bros., much like after Harry Potter, felt compelled to produce spinoff films. Unfortunately, the Hobbit trilogy pales in comparison to the original films, even with Jackson rejoining the project. The main issue with the Hobbit movies lies in their attempt to stretch a relatively brief tale into an epic journey without properly addressing the challenges this expansion presents.
It seems that, after all these years, Warner Bros. might be repeating an old error by producing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a movie set during the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Yet, the initial film in the series conceals a crucial aspect that justifies another spinoff.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring‘s Timeline Is a Little Confusing
In my own account, as a follower of events in Middle-earth: Following the narrative of The Fellowship of the Ring, the focus shifts towards the peaceful land of the Shire. A dear friend from my past adventures with Gandalf and the Dwarves, Bilbo Baggins, is turning 111 and invites me to join his celebration. However, an unusual incident occurs when Bilbo mysteriously vanishes during the party before departing to reside with the Elves. This oddity piques Gandalf’s curiosity, leading him to discover that Bilbo had bestowed a peculiar ring upon his nephew, Frodo. Given my knowledge of the malevolent jewels scattered across Middle-earth, I urge Frodo to safeguard this ring and set out to uncover more about its true nature.
At this juncture, events take an unusual turn. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” series, a span of seventeen years elapses from when Gandalf departs to when he returns to the Shire. Similarly to the film adaptation, Gandalf delves into ancient texts in an attempt to discern whether or not Bilbo’s ring is indeed the One Ring that Sauron seeks. Although the movie abridges Gandalf’s journey, it remains evident that some time has transpired, with “The Hunt for Gollum” filling this gap.
The Hunt for Gollum‘s Story Was There the Whole Time
Beyond studying, Gandalf advises his companion Aragorn to track down Gollum, the one who previously owned the ring before it was found by Bilbo. Although “The Fellowship of the Ring” doesn’t explicitly mention this at first, it later becomes clear that Aragorn is not just randomly encountering the Hobbits but has a role in their journey against the Nazgûl. The storyline of Gollum’s pursuit will offer more insight into this connection.
In the beginning of the movie, it’s highly probable that Aragorn will pursue Gollum relentlessly. However, Gollum is not in a friendly disposition due to the harsh treatment life has given him over the years. After leaving his cave home in search of the ring following Bilbo’s theft, Gollum encounters numerous difficulties and eventually falls into Sauron’s grasp in Mordor. There, Sauron subjects him to severe questioning, but all he manages to extract is “Baggins” and “Shire.” Despite his intelligence, Sauron struggles to comprehend the full significance of these words for a considerable period. This time gap enables Gandalf to catch up and perceive that he needs to confront Gollum as well.
Titled “The Hunt for Gollum“, this upcoming film promises to delve into all those significant events and potentially introduce new ones. Despite Aragorn’s greatness, a two-hour pursuit of an elusive character who doesn’t wish to be found might not resonate as a blockbuster success. However, the movie’s narrative isn’t entirely devoid of value, which could help it steer clear of the same pitfalls as the The Hobbit trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
