Considering that the long-awaited Netflix movie “Havoc” featuring Tom Hardy has been released, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit Gareth Evans’ masterpiece, “The Raid 2,” and understand why “The Raid 2” is essentially the first installment of “The Raid” series.
In 2014, the sequel was launched, following closely the events of the initial operation. Character Rama, portrayed by Iko Uwais, infiltrated the criminal underworld of Jakarta, aiming to dismantle the syndicate and expose the rot within his own police department.
In order to create the intense fight sequences seen in The Raid 2, a total of 18 months were spent on preparation (not including the pre-existing choreography from The Raid 1). For six months prior to filming these action scenes, Iko Uwais and other stunt performers underwent training together to foster mutual trust. This way, if one person made a mistake during the fights, the others wouldn’t feel compelled to retaliate with excessive force.
As Gareth Evans mentioned, “The Raid 2” picks up two hours after where “The Raid” (2011) ends. Initially, there were plans for a third film, set to begin three hours before “The Raid 2” concludes. However, in 2018, Evans expressed his desire to explore other projects first. Over time, he felt that the series had adequately concluded with the second movie and lessened his urge to revisit the franchise. Concerned about potential ‘franchise fatigue’, he believed it was unlikely for him to direct a third film.
In simpler terms, both movies are often considered among the top-notch action films from recent years. During a post-screening question-and-answer session, filmmaker Gareth Evans clarified that, contrary to popular belief, The Raid 2 is actually the first installment of the series, known as The Raid 1.
