Why The Rookie’s Longest Villain Isn’t Done Yet and Will Return for Season 8

Warning: SPOILERS for The Rookie season 7, episode 18, “The Good, The Bad, And The Oscar.”

In the seventh season of “The Rookie,” fresh threats have emerged that could persist throughout the show’s future. Creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley reveals a reason why one ongoing antagonist is yet to be apprehended following the season finale. Spanning over six seasons, the cast of “The Roke” has integrated numerous side characters and villains who have garnered as much adoration from fans as the main characters themselves. As the season 7 finale concludes, two of the show’s most recognized antagonists are poised to keep causing trouble for John Nolan and his friends.

In an interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Alexi Hawley explains that the storyline for Matthew Glave’s character, Oscar Hutchinson, hasn’t reached its conclusion yet because there’s still a need to justify his ongoing role in the series. In the finale of season 7, Oscar takes Nolan hostage but manages to escape in a helicopter just as Nyla and a boy with a drone arrive to help John. This suggests that we can expect Oscar to cause more trouble in season 8 of The Rookie.

Matthew possesses exceptional talent, and it’s one of those instances where we’ve been fortunate to encounter it more than once throughout the series. You create a character intended to appear only once, but then you discover an actor who delivers an outstanding performance, and you think to yourself, “I want to bring them back for another role.

And thus, Oscar has consistently been a source of amusement, a challenge, and sheer fun, yet also potentially perilous. Each time he returns, there’s a spark that ignites excitement within me. It seems we can’t keep him confined indefinitely, avoiding capture. So, what will be the next phase of Oscar’s adventure in season 8, and where will it lead? I am unsure at this point, but rest assured, he will make a comeback again.

What Oscar’s Escape Means For The Rookie Season 8

He And Monica Will Continue To Terrorize The LAPD

Since the initial season, Oscar Hutchinson has been recognized as one of “The Rookie”‘s top antagonists. While season 7 of “The Rookie” introduces plots like Liam Glasser’s trial and the construction of a malevolent AI, Oscar Hutchinson’s return and subsequent escape are central to the conflict that culminates in the season finale. As per Hawley’s statements, it wasn’t just that Oscar escaped to keep his story unfinished but rather because he intends to reappear in “The Rookie” season 8.

It’s quite intriguing, considering Monica’s unexpected reveal at the close of The Rookie season 7 finale – she had taken confidential data to force the LAPD into granting her an immunity deal. With these two antagonists now roaming freely, there’s a high probability that Oscar and Monica might team up for more elaborate plans in the coming days. Even though Hawley hasn’t fully mapped out Oscar’s future plotline, his persistent partnership with Monica would undoubtedly become a significant hassle for Nolan.

Our Take On Oscar’s Escape In The Rookie Season 7 Finale

He’s Available For Even Bigger Storylines Now

In the upcoming season 8 of The Rookie, it’s important to continue exploring some characters like Officer Seth Ridley played by Patrick Keleher. However, special attention should be given to Oscar, as there are indications that he and Monica have kept tabs on each other. Given that Oscar has been hinted at working on something significant in the season 7 finale, it would be fitting for his storyline to reach a climactic conclusion in season 8, ensuring his long-term impact is appropriately honored.
