The Russo Brothers, known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are returning to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Initially, they considered passing on this opportunity. In a chat with Omelete, they explained how they ultimately decided to return. They mentioned that it was Kevin Feige’s idea to have Robert Downey Jr. reprise his role as the villain Doctor Doom, but this didn’t immediately convince the Russo Brothers to join. Despite Downey’s efforts to persuade them, the brothers hesitated because they were struggling to develop a suitable storyline. It wasn’t until screenwriter Stephen McFeely presented them with an intriguing concept that they saw the project’s potential.
Afterward, Robert suggested the Avengers films to us but we declined. As Joe Russo stated, ‘It was strange because we had previously expressed our unwillingness to return. We simply didn’t have a suitable storyline or an entrance point. For a while, we were quite resistant.’
Later on, Russo shared that McFeely played a significant role in altering the directors’ decisions. “One day,” Russo recounted, “Stephen McFeely, one of our key collaborators, proposed an idea. Our response was, ‘That’s the story!’ This tale needed to be shared; it’s an incredibly powerful narrative!
The Russos have shared that one key motivation behind creating both “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” was to help the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) get back to delivering a central, concentrated storyline. Their aim is to intrigue viewers with the movies’ narrative by assembling an array of Marvel characters for a battle against Doctor Doom. It’s worth noting that the upcoming Avengers films mark the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, but for the Russos, they represent a “fresh start” or “new chapter” for the MCU franchise.
The film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release in cinemas in May 2026, with production set to begin soon. Although the official cast has yet to be revealed, we anticipate appearances from Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, actors from the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, and others. The film “Secret Wars” is scheduled to film next summer and will premiere in 2027.
The Russo brothers, who are renowned for creating some of the most well-received Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, have chosen to return to the franchise not just because of the chance to work with Downey again on an Avengers project, but primarily because they wanted a compelling story to drive their decision. Although the opportunity to rejoin forces with Downey must have been enticing, it’s reassuring to learn that the Russos resisted until they found a suitable plot. The upcoming film, titled “Doomsday,” will involve multiple elements as it introduces Doctor Doom and follows up on storylines from other MCU projects. Establishing a tight, focused narrative is crucial for this project. Unlike many directors, the Russos understand what makes Marvel films effective, and it would have been disappointing if they returned solely for a monetary gain. The success of “Doomsday” is vital to the MCU, and it seems that the Russos are taking the right steps towards ensuring its triumph.
For now, certain aspects of the narrative are being kept secret. Nevertheless, the Russos have given us hints suggesting that Tony Stark’s death in “Avengers: Endgame” plays a role in Doctor Doom’s character development, which offers some insight into Downey’s unexpected return to the Marvel universe. The upcoming “Doomsday” promises to be quite intriguing when it arrives next summer. It seems there is much potential for an engaging, grand tale that ties together various parts of the multiverse, and if anyone can accomplish this feat, it’s the Russos.
