As I delve deeper into the vibrant and dynamic life of Travis Kelce, I am struck by his infectious energy, relentless pursuit of excellence, and unapologetic zest for living. From his humble beginnings to his meteoric rise as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Travis’ journey is a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and an indomitable spirit.
Ed Kelce has Taylor Swift‘s birthday present all mapped out. Are you ready for it?
The father of Travis Kelce, who has been in a relationship with the “Cruel Summer” singer for more than a year, understands that when it comes to gift-giving for her, or even his sons Travis and Jason Kelce, one needs to come up with unique and unconventional presents.
Ed pointed out on the December 12 episode of the Baskin and Phelps podcast, released a day before Taylor’s 35th birthday, that buying her a gift is similar to trying to buy something for Jason or Travis. According to him, they don’t desire anything new because they already have everything they want.
Ed—who shares Travis and Jason with ex-wife Donna Kelce—added, “You can’t go that route.”
“You have to look beyond that. You gotta dig down and come up with something special,” he continued. “The amount of money is meaningless. You’re not going to crush Taylor Swift with a gift that cost, you know, $100,000.”
Instead, Ed thinks that the key to winning over a Grammy winner lies in securing something significant, disregarding its cost.
As a lifestyle expert, I would suggest finding an item that tugs at her emotional heartstrings and costs only ten dollars. Once you’ve found it, she’ll surely respond with warmth and affection. It’s essential to discover what evokes those special feelings in her.
Apart from expressing his delight in an uncontainable manner, Ed couldn’t hide his admiration for his entire family either. He mentioned that Kylie Kelce’s podcast has garnered immense popularity, and he’s thrilled about being a grandpa to Wyatt (age 5), Elliotte (3), Bennett (21 months), and the new baby they are expecting.
He expressed that he’s currently enjoying himself immensely with his grandchildren and grandsons, and added that his life is quite busy and fulfilling.
As for if his grandchildren will follow the family’s sporty tradition, Ed isn’t completely certain about that just yet.
He expressed his confidence that they will act in some way,” he said. “When it comes to athletes, I’ve always believed that the best approach is to help them discover their passions and then nurture them. This could be sports or other activities like art, music, dance, and so on. It’s important to support your children when they decide what they want to pursue.
But he does think they’re set up for athletic success, adding, “Their mother’s a hell of an athlete, not to mention what their father and their Uncle Travy did.”
For a deeper dive into “Uncle Travy” and his life beyond the football field, keep reading.
Although Travis Kelce might always have a strong connection with Kansas City, Missouri, his childhood was spent in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Instead of mentioning his alma mater (University of Cincinnati), the man proudly shouts out his hometown during broadcasts featuring player introductions.
Which, as you might guess, has irked some fellow alums.
Travis shared in 2019 that although he greatly values his time at the University of Cincinnati and holds those days dear, he acknowledged it wasn’t always simple for him there. It was challenging, even difficult. He lost his scholarship and made some poor decisions. There are likely many people in this room who know someone from Cleveland Heights High School who has also made questionable choices. To all my friends, I was that person.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express that this place, the Heights, isn’t simply dear to me; it resonates deeply with every soul here. The diversity of this city is awe-inspiring. It stirs something profound within me. Everything I engage in is for the betterment of this city. Admittedly, it may sound overused, but let me assure you, everything I do out there – whether it’s my dance in the end zone or any other action – that’s a tribute to Cleveland Heights, for all of you.
2. About that revoked scholarship…
Following their unbeaten 2009 season, which also earned them the Big East championship, Travis was found to have used marijuana prior to the 2010 Sugar Bowl. This was due to his excessive celebrations on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans.
Beyond just missing the bowl game, he was suspended by the NCAA for the entire 2010 season and lost his scholarship. With nowhere to live, he moved in with his brother Jason (moving right into Jason’s bedroom in the house they both shared with some teammates). In search of income, he took a job that required him to call people and ask about their opinions on the Affordable Care Act.
They did, and Travis could not wait to get back on the field.
3. Before focusing on football, Travis had experience playing hockey, baseball, and basketball. During high school, he served as a quarterback. Notably, he was considered a two-star recruit for Cincinnati’s quarterback position. However, after his suspension, he was reinstated to the team under the condition that he switched positions to tight end.
In his conversation with Arrowhead Pride after being drafted by the Chiefs in 2013, Travis explained that at the time, our team had an exceptional quarterback named Zach Collaros. However, we required assistance in both our rushing and passing attacks. Discussing this with my coach, Butch Jones, who was leading us then, he suggested we needed a tight end. Since my abilities, athleticism, and direction were compatible, it all lined up perfectly for me.
In 2017, when he spoke with GQ, he essentially said that people throughout his life had always seen him as a tight end rather than an exception.
4. The house located on 127 W. Nixon St., where Travis shared a room with Jason and other University of Cincinnati students, was often the setting for many rowdy activities involving beer.
Tom DeTemple, a college friend and teammate, shared with the New York Times before the 2024 Super Bowl that the brothers were fond of spending hours playing Nintendo 64. They’d often engage in drinking games as they played, which they concocted on the spot. Remarkably skilled at these impromptu gaming sessions involving beverages.
5. And suffice it to say, Travis is extremely proud of being a Bearcat.
He shared with reporters before the 2023 Super Bowl that it’s all about his roots in Cincinnati. After all, he’s deeply proud of his ties to the University of Cincinnati. He finally earned his degree, and whenever possible, he gives back to the university. Whenever he can, he returns to the university. He simply misses being around the players he teamed up with and the people he met there who have always supported him through life’s highs and lows.
When he found himself facing difficulties with the NCAA, he remarked, “Those who were part of the university – the players, coaches, and staff – had faith in my ability to improve the situation and make things right for myself. This support was incredibly significant for me during that period.
6. Travis, who enrolled in college then joined the draft nearly a decade ago, finally received his degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2022. However, he didn’t collect his diploma until April 2024, during an unexpected graduation ceremony that coincided with him and Jason recording a live episode of New Heights at Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena.
As I proudly strode towards the dean, beer can clutched tightly in my hand, I could barely contain my excitement. Once our hands met in congratulations, that can of frosty brew found its way to my lips without a second thought – a well-deserved toast to my hard-earned degree!
And Travis was going to graduate in 2022 but he missed his flight.
7. Due mainly to off-field problems, Travis was chosen fifth among tight ends in the 2013 NFL Draft, selected in the third round by the Chiefs. Later on, coach Andy Reid, who had previously coached Jason in Philadelphia, requested the older Kelce sibling to endorse Travis.
Andy and Travis have three Super Bowl rings to show for Jason’s endorsement.
For years now, I’ve found myself drawing inspiration from Randy Newman’s “Burn On,” a song that’s become my go-to tune before any major event.
Speaking on the “PFT Live” podcast in 2017, he shared that since I’m from the eastern side of Cleveland, this particular song reminds me of my family and makes me reflect on where I am today in life, and how much I value it all.
Let us explain: It’s in the opening credits of Major League, the ultimate Cleveland sports movie.
9. Everyone, including Travis, is mispronouncing his last name.
While he and Jason have just gone with Kelce sounding like “Kel-see,” it actually rhymes with “else.”
Travis’ teammate Chris Jones dropped a surprising comment about his situation on Inside the NFL in January, saying “Freaky, isn’t it?”, which was confirmed when he and his brothers directly questioned their father Ed Kelce about it during their New Heights podcast episode.
Jason wondered aloud, “Why on earth did you suddenly decide to change your name, and now we go by ‘Kel-see’? I can’t help but wonder why we thought our name was anything else for the first 24 years… or rather, the last 27 years of my life, and 25 years of yours, Trav?
Ed admitted he “got tired of correcting people” but urged his son to “do whatever you want.”
10. Travis, who wears jersey number 87, honors Jason, who was born that same year (1987), in the NFL.
Travis clarified to NFL Films before the 2023 Super Bowl, where his Chiefs faced off against Jason’s Eagles, that if there is a Kelce legacy in the NFL, it stems from the birth of this towering figure in 1987.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve proudly supported Operation Breakthrough, a remarkable learning center based in Kansas City, for quite some time now. My connection with this incredible nonprofit began during my first visit in 2015 when I had the pleasure of reading “The Cat in the Hat” to their wonderful children. Travis’ Foundation 87 and Running has been honored to be a part of their journey ever since.
Yes, reader, he wore the hat.
Afterward, Travis made an investment in the Smart Lab of the program and purchased the neighboring muffler shop to enable expansion and establish the Ignition Lab. At this Ignition Lab, the young students transformed old automobiles that were headed for the scrapyard into functional electric vehicles.
12. Travis and Jason refer to their listeners as “92% club” members, reminiscing about a time when Jason mentioned that a quarterback sneak play was successful approximately 92% of the time in situations where only one yard was needed to secure a touchdown.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must share an intriguing anecdote: This devoted group of enthusiasts has affectionately dubbed themselves the “92 percenters,” as per the podcast’s official website. This moniker seems to function much like a covert handshake among them, but instead expressed in words.
Who were the Kelce brothers to argue with that?
13. Travis is accompanied by his three trainers – Alex Skacel, Andrew Spruill, and Laurence Justin Ng – who often travel with him. As reported by The Athletic, one of these trainers regularly goes with him to help keep him in top physical condition for football throughout the year.
Alex, who happens to be a physical therapist as well, remembered Travis expressing his desire for an evening jog, following the numerous fashion shows at Paris Fashion Week. This was because he had skipped exercising that particular day.
At midnight, our coach instructed the New York Times in April that we were performing sprints across the bridges over the river. Regardless of his location, he always manages to complete whatever tasks are necessary for him.
14. Kumar Ferguson, who’s been friends with Travis since their days in fourth grade at Cleveland Heights, is his personal chef. (Informal)
In 2016, he was a part-time chef and a truck driver, when suddenly, Travis contacted him with an intriguing prospect to grab.
In 2023, Kumar said to Vanity Fair, ‘He expressed his desire to intensify his diet regimen significantly.’ I responded, ‘Wow, let’s give it a shot.’ A few days afterward, I found myself in Kansas City.
He has taken care of various tasks, ranging from filling up Travis’ refrigerator to providing nutritious meals at the Chiefs’ training center.
15. I, Travis, find my facial hair under closer scrutiny than ever before, so I shared on New Heights that I trimmed off my off-season beard last year and retained the mustache as a tribute to the walrus-like look preferred by Andy Reid, which I plan to replicate in 2024.
16. In April 2024, Travis secured a two-year deal worth $34.25 million, making him the highest-earning tight end in the NFL for the first time throughout his professional career.
Which finally put an end to years of chatter about how much money he wasn’t making.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair in 2023, Travis jokingly shared that his superiors often remind him of his undercompensation. Whenever he brings up the topic of seeking more pay, they simply suggest he should approach the Chiefs about it.
However, as other income streams became available to him, his focus shifted more towards the overall atmosphere or “vibes” rather than just the salary.
He put it this way: “The free market seems exciting until you find yourself not coming out on top, and that’s just not my style. I enjoy success, I appreciate my current position.
Admittedly, witnessing other players’ large earnings can give you a slight pang. It tends to make one question whether they are being unfairly treated. I’m not sure if I would push harder for more pay if I were in their shoes, but I do enjoy showing up at that workplace each day.
17. Travis has always had an interest in fashion, stemming from his upbringing in Cleveland Heights. As he put it to Vanity Fair in 2023, his high school was essentially a daily fashion show.
Consequently, turning his bedroom into a closet was a smart move to accommodate his designer clothing collection and over 300 pairs of sneakers – even a set of size-13 Nike Air Mags, which he splurged on during his rookie year, despite them being slightly too small for him.
In the early stages of his professional journey, he shared with the Wall Street Journal, obtaining shoes was about fitting into whichever size was available for the pair he desired, since there weren’t as many sneaker apps around back then.
Although he is heavily associated with Nike, and this connection isn’t just due to the brand sponsoring him, Chuck Taylors are significant to him as well because they bring back memories of the fictional baseball star Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez from The Sandlot.
18. Among his dozens of investments, Travis co-owns Ohio-brewed Garage Beer with Jason.
Travis expressed in a June statement that it’s no secret he enjoys having a few beers occasionally. So, being the owner of Garage Beer and deeply invested in crafting top-notch light beer is thrilling for him. There’s nothing more effective at bonding people than a cold beer, and for Travis and Jason, that’s what beer represents – friends, family, and good times.
19. We’re sensing a theme when it comes to Travis’ guilty pleasure TV choices.
In the past, it was known as “Gossip Girl”: “I must say, it’s fantastic,” he remarked on “New Heights”. It’s essentially a TV series set in New York City schools, filled with plenty of drama and people constantly gossiping and talking negatively about each other.
His new favorite show? Peacock’s Emmy-winning backstab-a-ganza The Traitors.
20. Recently, Travis, who is in his 12th season in the NFL and 35 years old, has become more candid about the physical strain football can impose on a player’s body.
However, he’s faced numerous setbacks right from the start, as he spent his rookie season recovering from a microfracture in his knee, which was followed by 10 surgeries throughout his career.
21. Travis openly discussed an unsuccessful endeavor he had during the Eras Tour, specifically his intention to gift Taylor Swift a friendship bracelet bearing his phone number upon her visit to Kansas City, which he shared on the radio show New Heights.
Following some whispers from those within her circle who were aware of Travis’s intentions, she reached out to him directly.
He shared with WSJ. Magazine that she clearly explained the situation to him, and luckily, managed to contact him.
22. For as long as he can remember, Travis has had a soft spot for French toast, adorned with whipped cream and drizzled with syrup, as his all-time favorite dessert.
But more recently he’s become a fan of his girlfriend’s homemade Pop-Tarts and cinnamon rolls.
23. One of Travis’ phone tones features Chris Farley exclaiming “Goodness gracious me!” (a similar phrase to “For the love of God!”) from the movie ‘Tommy Boy’.
He shared with WSJ. The Magazine that he had introduced his love for the humor of Farley, Adam Sandler, and Will Ferrell to his girlfriend, saying something like, “I’ve shown her this is my thing.
24. Following their AFC Championship victory against the Bengals in 2019, Travis exclaimed “You’ve got to fight for your right to party!” and inspired the Chiefs to play the Beastie Boys song titled “Fight for Your Right to Party” every time they scored a touchdown at Arrowhead Stadium.
Travis Kelce functions like a power amplifier, and it’s tough to fully grasp how significant that quality is,” Brett Veach shared with ESPN in 2020. “He embodies an exceptional character, charm, enthusiasm, and manages to draw others into his circle. In our team environment, everyone seems to be friends with Travis Kelce. He’s not just a source of energy; he uplifts everyone’s spirits, concentration, and focus, and in the end, he remains enjoyable company.
However, the lively host who introduced it into their lives confessed that he wasn’t familiar with all the lyrics of the 1986 hit until he was required to perform it alongside Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in February 2023.
25. Regarding his preferences, in May 2024, Travis mentioned that among Taylor’s songs, “Blank Space,” “The Alchemy,” and “So High School” are his top three favorites.
Inquired about it back in September, but when the question was posed again, he replied with a sentiment that suggested a deep fondness for each and every one of them: “They’re all my favorites – literally every single one.
26. Early in his career, Travis drew comparisons to the esteemed Kansas City Chiefs’ former tight end, Tony Gonzalez, who hung up his cleats in 2013 following a 17-year NFL stint.
In 2015, as discussions escalated about whether he could indeed exceed Tony’s accomplishments and what a letdown it would be if he failed, Travis chose to disregard the buzz.
He shared with Complex that he sets his own bars particularly high, aiming for nothing less than achieving the most exceptional statistical season a tight end has ever seen.
On September 29th, I proudly claimed the title of the Chiefs’ all-time leading receiver as my 917th catch surpassed Tony’s record.
Travis remarked on New Heights, “It’s amazing how things often end up back where they started.” Being at the forefront with the Kansas City Chiefs, an organization established in the ’60s and one of the pioneers who have managed to thrive over time, is quite something. Much of this success can be attributed to their deep-rooted history and a man like Tony Gonzalez, who has been a guiding figure for me. I truly admire him.
27. Of Travis’ many accomplishments, keeping his house in order on his own isn’t one of them.
“He can’t clean,” mom Donna Kelce told Extra in September. “He can’t cook.”
However, inviting a special person during her visit might have provided an additional incentive for me to tidy things up or organize myself better.
“He’s getting a little better,” Donna acknowledged. “I think he’s getting some help.”
