As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of many cinematic icons, I must say that the recasting of Bernard Hill in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light is bittersweet. On one hand, it’s always a loss when we bid farewell to a talent as immense as Hill’s. On the other, the prospect of Timothy Spall stepping into such illustrious shoes is nothing short of exhilarating.
After a significant hiatus, Wolf Hall has returned to our TV screens once more, however, some crucial characters have been recast in the anticipated sequel, with Timothy Spall being one of the notable newcomers.
The show is set in the 1530s and begins shortly after the beheading of Anne Boleyn, portrayed by Claire Foy. In this era, we find the ruthless King Henry VIII, played by Damian Lewis, marrying his third wife, Jane Seymour, who is brought to life by Kate Phillips in this adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s renowned historical novels.
Once more, his most trusted counselors and nobles gather around him, among them the Duke of Norfolk (portrayed by Spall). However, due to their familial bond, he has found himself somewhat out of favor because Boleyn is his niece. Despite this connection, he did not act to prevent her tragic end.
In The Mirror and The Light, Spall assumes the character of Norfolk, a part previously brought to life by Bernard Hill, famously in the first season, who is known for his roles in Lord of the Rings and Boys from the Blackstuff.
Who plays the Duke of Norfolk in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light?
In “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light,” Timothy Spall takes over the role that was once played by the late Bernard Hill as the character portrayed is the Duke of Norfolk.
Previously in their professional journeys, Spall and Hill found themselves working together on BBC Radio 4’s comedy series Greywing, where they lent their voices to the protagonist and his evil counterpart respectively, with the show premiering back in 1992.
Upon starting at Wolf Hall, Spall shared with The Guardian his primary concern as being “a significant shift over the past nine years, which has been both terrifying and indicative of a move farther from democracy, or possibly toward an entirely different system.
“In essence, Wolf Hall offers a compelling argument for democracy. By portraying the intricate workings of power within a dictatorship, it vividly illustrates the capricious nature of personal power, the importance of family lineage, and the complexities of political maneuvering.
“That might be where we’re all heading. So be careful what you wish for.”
Why was Bernard Hill recast in Wolf Hall?
Bernard Hill sadly passed away on 5th May 2024.
In the second season of BBC’s drama “The Responder,” his swan song performance aired, remarkably on the day of his passing. This tragic timing allowed viewers to pay their final tribute to his exceptional skill and talent.
During the time of filming for Wolf Hall season 2, which started in late 2023, it’s conceivable that Hill, who was still alive then, might not have been in good enough health to tackle the challenging role of the Duke of Norfolk, or he may have been occupied with other obligations instead.
The performer gained recognition throughout his extensive film and TV work spanning several decades, with appearances in blockbusters like Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, as well as series such as Boys from the Blackstuff and Shakespeare productions by the BBC.
