Amazon has decided to discontinue the airing of the fantasy series “The Wheel of Time,” which concludes its run. This news was announced at the end of May, approximately a month following the Season 3 finale that aired on the 2025 television schedule. While some viewers may not have been taken aback by this cancellation, it hasn’t stopped others from expressing their disappointment. Recently, the show’s creator has shared a poignant message with fans regarding the series’ conclusion.

Rafe Judkins, who also served as showrunner and executive producer, took to Instagram to share a lengthy message regarding Wheel of Time’s cancellation, admitting he’s been constantly asked why the show was axed. He admitted he didn’t know. And then, he praised the cast and crew, reflecting on the show’s short but impactful run that included appearing in the Nielsen Top 10 for nearly 20 weeks:

For the past week, I’ve been inundated with inquiries about the cancellation of The Wheel of Time series. Regrettably, I don’t have a definitive answer. I wish I could provide a straightforward explanation that satisfies everyone who cherishes this show, but unfortunately, I cannot.

The main cast of “The Wheel of Time” is quite extensive, featuring actors like Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, and Josha Stradowski, among others. This talented group was a joy to watch, and it’s unfortunate that they won’t have the opportunity to carry on this narrative any longer.

Beyond expressing my admiration for the intricate and immersive fantasy world Robert Jordan crafted in his book series, The Wheel of Time, I must say that its cancellation is truly disheartening. For those of us who have followed the story closely, it’s clear there was so much more to explore. Judkins summed it up perfectly when he called it a “devastating blow”.

From the very beginning in shaping the concept, one key objective I had in mind for this series was to fully unfold the narrative. This is because the Wheel of Time books have consistently excelled at what television does best – improving as they progress. As our cast and crew joined us, they too recognized the potential if we were given the chance to complete this extraordinary tale. Throughout our journey, many personal and creative compromises were made in pursuit of that ending, and falling short now feels like a crushing disappointment for everyone involved.

Nevertheless, Judkins remains steadfast in his faith towards “The Wheel of Time”, which is heartening to observe. Regardless of the time it may take for it to resurface, in any shape or form, he maintains his optimism.

There’s been a lot said about the shift in TV towards shorter seasons with fewer episodes and faster methods to gain more streaming subscribers. However, I strongly feel that this contradicts television’s core power – immersive storytelling. Television is an art form, similar to epic fantasy, where its finest examples provide viewers with a welcoming world to revisit and engage with beloved characters year after year. I trust that there are industry leaders who understand this. I believe we will navigate through this current phase of the industry and return to our strengths – introducing captivating characters into homes and lives on a weekly basis.

To some extent, enthusiasts at least have a chance to follow along with the tales from their cherished book series, even if it’s not ideal given that Judkins doesn’t envision it going further anywhere else.

For now, all three seasons of the show are accessible for Amazon Prime subscribers, and unless things change soon, they’re unlikely to be removed. If you find yourself missing the content, there are numerous other fantasy series available to keep you entertained.
