Add The Traitors to your watchlist
Gather comfortably in your candlelit nooks for an ancient sea story. In 1629, the Dutch vessel Batavia veered off its intended path, leaving hundreds of passengers adrift on an island located to the west of Australia. Trust among the survivors quickly eroded, and as Mark Pos, a Dutch TV producer, explained on the Today program two weeks ago, “A tragic series of events unfolded,” which eventually led to a bloodbath. Interestingly enough, this grim sequence of events served as inspiration for Pos when he developed the highly successful television show named The Traitors.
Over 5 million people tuned in for the debut of the first series of the UK version in 2022, and even more have joined in for the current third series launch. The producers have made some adjustments to keep things interesting, but it’s still essentially about this: There are Traitors hidden among a group that appears to be trustworthy; the Traitors aim to eliminate the Faithful while the Faithful try to expose and banish the Traitors. A substantial prize of £120,000 is at stake in this game, which can be likened to an intense version of Wink Murder, set in a haunting Scottish castle. The diverse cast, along with Claudia Winkleman donning a cape, adds to its allure. But what makes it truly unique?
The Traitors cuts to the heart of what it means to be human
For this review, I’ve thoroughly watched and can confidently say that time wasn’t squandered: The Traitors is a captivating mix of absurd, compelling, and informative. Skipping through the daily tasks or “missions” set by the producers to maintain unity didn’t diminish my interest, as there were still countless hours of speculating about breakfast behaviors to keep me hooked. However, when the boardroom scene arrived, everyone had to vie for survival. To be honest, if my pants were on fire during this segment, I probably wouldn’t have paused to extinguish it and would have continued watching instead.
In this scenario, it’s not surprising to see people following the crowd, as if blindly obeying a leader who seems untroubled – a phenomenon that’s been observed many times. What stands out here is:
1. People’s belief that repeatedly declaring their loyalty will protect them, despite the fact that neither the faithful nor the traitors have any certainty about this.
2. The assumption that none of the new acquaintances could possibly be a traitor, even though we all know there are some among us.
3. The loss of reason and logic, leading to a state where I feel compelled to shout at the screen in frustration and lose faith in humanity. After that, I just click “watch next”.
After a prolonged period, approximately a decade or so, reality TV has presented us with an overly positive and harmonious image of the world. Despite the infamous character Nasty Nick from Big Brother being ostracized for his manipulative tactics years ago, it was still necessary for regulatory bodies like Ofcom to intervene when viewers found the behavior of Love Island’s romancing gentlemen to be excessively cruel. Even though contestants have showcased their talents in areas such as baking, sewing, and pottery, there has persisted an air of camaraderie on these shows that seems somewhat fake, tapping into our perception that excessive competitiveness is distasteful, even uncharacteristic of British culture.
The Traitors discards conventional norms, instead embracing not merely cunning but true treachery. It praises sisters deceiving one another, a character adopting a Welsh accent supposedly for more trustworthiness, and even a clergy member willing to set aside her role as a vicar to swear by the Holy Spirit. And it’s exhilarating. We are drawn into a realm of those who have been deceived and those who deceive.
Both these roles offer unique pleasures and challenges, touching upon the essence of human nature. If you were to choose, would you pick the role offered to thousands this year, where many willingly chose to be Traitors? However, every participant ultimately surrenders their principles for the allure of a reward. This could be seen as an expression of our deepest desires or a chilling reflection of contemporary existence. I’m completely torn on the matter.
