Why Wicked’s Marissa Bode Wants Her Casting to Set A New Precedent

As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving world of entertainment, I must say that the star-studded premiere of “Wicked” leaves me thoroughly impressed! With a cast boasting the likes of Ashley Tisdale, Stassi Schroeder, and Chrishell Stause, among others, it’s clear that this production is not just another fairy tale.

Marissa Bode hopes her role in Wicked will defy more than gravity going forward.

In the movie version of the Broadway musical, a 24-year-old actress portrays Nessarose, the sister character to Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba. This performer is proudly making history as the first wheelchair user to play the student from Shiz University. However, she is resolute about not being the only one to do so in the future.

Marissa expressed her viewpoint, stating, “It’s important for future casting decisions to consider individuals with disabilities, not only for myself but also for other talented disabled artists. Even today on the red carpet, witnessing the enthusiasm of other disabled people for Wicked and their personal connections to it is incredibly meaningful to me.

Additionally, she’s aware that her portrayal in the play “Wicked” (where she performs alongside stars such as Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater and others) will provide a sense of being recognized to many people.

As a child, I didn’t encounter much of it frequently, but whenever I did, it held immense significance. It made me feel, ‘Yes, it can be done. There is a space for me here.’ – Marissa

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the extraordinary journey of this Wisconsin native. This inspiring individual, who tragically became disabled at 11 due to a car accident, has ignited a burning passion within me. This passion is fueled by their relentless advocacy for increased representation in the future of Tinseltown.

Marissa emphasized to Variety in September that it’s crucial not only to portray authentic disabled individuals on screen, but also to ensure the manner of representation is authentic as well.

She said, ‘I believe seeing others who share their experiences can encourage other disabled individuals to voice their concerns about accessibility and ableism. These issues, unfortunately still present in our society today, are just the surface of the larger disability rights movement.’ In simpler terms, representation is only a small part of the bigger picture when it comes to advocating for disability rights.
