As a passionate fan who has eagerly devoured every historical fantasy series that comes my way, I must confess I am deeply disheartened by the cancellation of My Lady Jane after just one season. Having immersed myself in the Tudor era and its captivating characters, I was looking forward to witnessing Lady Jane Grey’s journey unfold beyond the cliffhanger ending of season 1.
Unfortunately, it’s been announced that the series “My Lady Jane” won’t be renewed for another season on Prime Video, leaving viewers disappointed.
The announcement about the series being cancelled has come just a few months after its premiere on the streaming platform in June, which received universal praise.
Drawing inspiration from the well-known novel penned by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand, this historical fantasy series provides a creative reinterpretation of the life story of Lady Jane Grey, a Tudor noblewoman. In 1553, she seized the English and Irish throne for nine days, which led to her being famously known as the ‘Nine-Day Queen’.
In the captivating series I’m engrossed in, I have the pleasure of witnessing Emily Bader portray the intriguing figure of Lady Jane Grey, while Edward Bluemel brings to life her husband, Lord Guildford Dudley.
Wondering why there won’t be a second instalment? Read on for everything you need to know.
Why won’t there be a My Lady Jane season 2?
Although it garnered praise from both critics and viewers, the show didn’t have exceptionally high viewership numbers. Upon its debut, it didn’t manage to crack the top ten weekly streaming charts according to Nielsen.
According to Deadline, who initially broke the news, the show’s low audience ratings played a significant role in Amazon Prime Video’s choice to cancel the series.
Fans will be greatly disheartened by the cancellation of the show, given the latest suggestions about a sequel and the thrilling cliffhanger at the end of season one where Jane barely evaded execution, leaving viewers excited to find out what happens next in her tale.
According to series creator Gemma Burgess in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, if we’re lucky enough to have a season 2, we’ll delve into their journeys as they mature, advance, and learn to thrive in a world where Jane is liberated, but the kingdom remains unstable.
“Because Mary’s still on the throne. There’s a lot more work to do before things are right.”
