As a seasoned observer of the entertainment industry, with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the star-studded premiere of “Wicked” left me simply spellbound. The sheer talent and charisma on display was nothing short of enchanting.
Dancing through delivery.
On November 9th, director Jon M. Chu and his wife Kristin Hodge welcomed their fifth child, a daughter, into the world. Interestingly, this was also the day of the Los Angeles premiere of his movie “Wicked”, causing him to miss the glamorous event. The next day, Jon joined Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and the rest of the “Wicked” cast at a FYC screening of the film. It was here that he disclosed the name of his newborn daughter.
He shared that his wife gave birth, and he stood by her side as he simultaneously watched a live stream of a premier event, saying, “Little Stevie Sky Chu” is now here.
Jon had previously announced the arrival of his latest child during the LA premiere.
Jon couldn’t be more surprised that this event took place during the movie premiere, as he posted a video of Kristin and their newborn on his Instagram Story with the caption. ‘There’s something magical happening right now. Welcome to our lives. You’re destined for greatness. Lots of magic-workers are supporting you.’
As I was unable to attend the movie premiere in person, I chose a unique way to make an appearance instead. Being a 45-year-old filmmaker and a proud father to Willow (7), Jonathan (5), Ruby (3), and Iggy (20 months), I decided to join the event from a very special location – my wife’s delivery room. By sharing a prerecorded video, I was able to express my excitement for the premiere while being present for an even more significant moment in our family life.
In the recording, he expressed his sincere regret, “I can’t be with you today.” It was November 9th, and there I was, at a hotel just across the street, eagerly preparing to join everyone. My family, friends, all our dear ones were gathered there. We had been anticipating this moment for three years, the chance to present our movie to you… but this moment has been something I’ve longed for my entire life, to welcome our fifth child into our family right now.
He added, “Of course this little girl knows when to show up. So anyway, I wish I could be there. But here I am.”
Despite not attending the initial U.S. premiere of his latest movie, the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” still made a presence, joining the live broadcast and even showing up towards the end of the night.
According to a post by Borys Kit on X (previously known as Twitter), Director Jon M. Chu arrived fashionably late at the premiere of his film following its initial screening, due to the birth of his fifth child. The Hollywood Reporter’s post also included a photo showing the director with Cynthia and producer Marc Platt, who swiftly rushed over to congratulate him.
Despite an unexpected turn of events that had me missing the red carpet premiere of my film, I made sure to inform my followers in advance that I wouldn’t be present at the event.
He posted on his Instagram Story just before the premiere, “This film has consistently been enigmatic in its progression. Today is a moment I’ve longed for, a day filled with excitement as two creations (the movie and a little girl) unfold together. Despite not being able to join you at tonight’s Wicked premiere, I couldn’t be more content.
At around 4 a.m. today, there was an unexpected shift in our plans. Instead, we are joyously preparing for the arrival of our fifth child in our household.
He ended his post with a Wicked joke, revealing that Elphaba and Glinda—the names of the musical’s two main characters—were not the inspirations for their daughter, saying, “No, we will not be naming her Galphaba.”
