As a film enthusiast with a lifelong passion for musicals and a soft spot for tales that delve deep into complex female friendships, I must say that Wicked has easily found a place among my all-time favorites. Having grown up listening to the original soundtrack and witnessing numerous stage productions, my expectations were sky-high, but director Jon M Chu managed to surpass them all.
As a devoted theater enthusiast and ardent fan of Wicked, I must admit that the task of bringing this beloved stage show to the big screen was no small feat. However, from the buzz among fans so far, it seems like director Jon M Chu has hit it out of the park with this adaptation!
As a cinephile, I’d like to share an insight from a filmmaker whose past works include “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In The Heights.” Early on during this project, he was offered one crucial piece of guidance that functioned as a beacon, illuminating his journey throughout the process.
The central aspect that intrigued me was the complex bond between these two ladies, the subtle hints they gave, and their pursuit of hidden truths. This was what I found most captivating in the story, serving as my primary source of inspiration.
Sure, the characters of Elphaba and Galinda are convincingly portrayed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande respectively in the movie adaptation. It was advantageous for Grande, who was an ardent admirer of the stage production, to be involved. However, this fervor sometimes led to slight differences of opinion regarding the best methods to execute their roles.
Ari adores the musical “Wicked,” and there are scenes that she considers sacred, so Chu said, “There are times I exclaim, ‘Hands off, hands off!’ And she has specific ones.” So, at one instance, we omitted the line “The Wizard will see you now” since in terms of their journey to Emerald City, it didn’t align with our geographical arrangement.
She exclaimed, ‘You simply must include that.’ She’d go ahead and jot it down in the script, despite it not being originally included.
The movie has recently hit theaters, yet it’s evident that viewers can’t get enough of it. In fact, Chu shared that attending the European Premiere in London and witnessing the audience enjoy the film was a truly satisfying experience for him.
He remarked, “For what feels like ages, our small office has been our secret hideaway.” He added, “The performances of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been nothing short of astonishing to us. It’s as if they were a hidden gem. To witness crowds cheer, sing along, weep, and leave feeling invigorated and exhilarated is everything to me. That’s why we take on this job.
He also mentioned that he’d always harbored doubts about whether he’d chosen correctly in various areas, yet he’s gradually accepting the fact that he might have struck a big success.
